Chapter 10: The Unlikely Alliance

Agent Miller stood by the open door of the black sedan, his trench coat pulled tightly against the evening chill. He didn't look surprised to see Julian and Thomas crawling out of a drainage canal; in fact, his expression suggested he had been waiting for this exact moment for a very long time.
“You’re cutting it close, Commander,” Miller said quietly, his eyes shifting from Julian’s faded tan uniform to Thomas’s soaked and bedraggled suit. “Federal security protocols flagged an unauthorized data export from the downtown logistics branch ten minutes ago. Half the private security contractors in the city are currently swarming the lobby.”
“They found the offline server room,” Julian said, stepping firmly onto the pavement and walking straight up to the federal agent. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small, ruggedized data chip, holding it out in the palm of his hand. “Here is the complete supply manifest from Sector Four. Unredacted, uncompressed, and fully authenticated with military-grade checksums.”
Miller looked down at the tiny piece of plastic, a slow, grim smile spreading across his face. He took the chip and slid it carefully into a secure metal case lined with electromagnetic shielding. “This is the missing link we’ve needed to unseat the entire board. With this evidence, we can freeze all corporate assets before they manage to liquidate the mineral rights in the buffer zone.”
Thomas leaned against the side of the car, breathing heavily as he wiped dirty water from his forehead. “What about Arthur and the security team? They know we have the files. They’ll try to fabricate counter-charges before morning.”
“Let them try,” Miller said, opening the rear door wider for them to climb inside. “My team has already seized the downtown branch's digital logs. Arthur’s personal terminals are currently being scrubbed for communication records linking him directly to the private security contractors.”
Julian and Thomas climbed into the back seat of the sedan. The doors slammed shut with a heavy, reassuring thud, and the vehicle pulled smoothly away from the curb, blending into the late-night city traffic. The interior was warm, smelling of fresh leather and coffee, a stark contrast to the damp, claustrophobic darkness of the drainage tunnel.
“So what happens now?” Thomas asked, looking between Julian and the federal agent as the car accelerated down the highway. “Once the board realizes their assets are frozen, they’re going to fight back with everything they’ve got. Their legal team is ruthless.”

“They can fight all they want in a federal courtroom,” Miller replied, keeping his eyes fixed on the road ahead through the rearview mirror. “Tomorrow morning, federal marshals will execute search warrants on every executive residence associated with the Sector Four cover-up. The corporate shield is finally coming down.”
Julian sat quietly in the corner of the back seat, staring out the window as the illuminated skyscrapers blurred into streaks of light against the dark night sky. His mind drifted back to the wire trash can in the reception lobby—to the crumpled piece of paper that Arthur had thrown down with such casual cruelty, believing that people and history could be discarded just as easily. That single, petty act of arrogance had set off a chain reaction that the corporate executives could never have anticipated.
