Chapter 8

The heavy oak doors of the study swung open, revealing the dim hallway beyond. Julian stood frozen in the center of the room, his mind racing through desperate, futile escape routes. There were no other exits from the study except the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a hundred-foot drop straight into the churning Atlantic Ocean. He was cornered, trapped by a woman he had systematically underestimated for three years.
"You can't do this, Eleanor," Julian pleaded, his voice cracking as the remnants of his formidable pride finally dissolved into raw terror. "We can make a deal. Half the company, the mansion—we can split it. We can start over."
Eleanor stopped at the doorway, not even bothering to turn around. Her silhouette was framed by the dim light of the corridor. "There is nothing to split, Julian. You never owned half of anything. You were merely leasing a lifestyle built on stolen ground. And lease is up."
Before Julian could lunge toward the door, heavy footsteps echoed from the hall. Two men in dark suits stepped into the study, their badges gleaming under the antique chandelier. Federal Marshals. One of them, a tall man with a stern jaw and cold gray eyes, pulled a set of steel handcuffs from his belt and stepped directly into Julian’s personal space.
"Julian Vance," the lead marshal said, his voice deep and authoritative. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, securities manipulation, and corporate embezzlement. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
"This is a mistake! A malicious prosecution!" Julian shouted, pulling his arms away as the marshal grabbed his wrist with an iron grip. "I demand to make a phone call! I demand my attorney!"
"You'll have plenty of calls at the federal detention center," the second marshal said bluntly, slamming Julian’s wrists together and locking the cuffs with a sharp click.
The cold steel bit into Julian’s skin, a stark, agonizing reminder of his total powerlessness. As the marshals dragged him toward the hallway, Julian caught one last glimpse of Eleanor standing quietly by her father’s desk. She didn't look triumphant or vengeful; she looked profoundly indifferent, as if he were nothing more than a minor administrative nuisance being cleared from her desk.
"You'll pay for this, Eleanor!" Julian screamed as they forced him through the double doors. "You hear me? You'll pay!"
His shouts echoed down the stone corridor, fading into the sound of the ocean wind as they led him out through the grand entrance hall. The courtyard outside was gray and desolate, the rented sedan sitting lonely beside the dry fountain. The two federal agents pushed Julian into the back of an unmarked black SUV, slamming the heavy door shut and sealing him inside a tiny, claustrophobic world of gray upholstery and stale air.
As the SUV's engine roared to life and the vehicle began to roll down the winding coastal driveway, Julian pressed his handcuffed hands against the tinted rear window. He watched the grand stone manor recede into the distance, realizing with crushing finality that his life as he knew it was utterly destroyed.
The drive back to the city felt like a slow-motion descent into hell. Every mile marker represented another layer of his former identity being stripped away—his wealth, his status, his reputation, his freedom. When the SUV finally pulled into the underground garage of the federal courthouse, the flashing red and blue lights of news vans illuminated the concrete walls. Word had already leaked out. The downfall of Julian Vance, the golden boy of the financial district, was breaking news across every major network.
As the marshals pulled Julian out of the vehicle, a wall of reporters and camera crews swarmed forward, shouting questions and thrusting microphones into his face. The camera flashes blinded him, burning white spots into his retinas.
"Mr. Vance! Is it true Amber Holdings took your entire empire?"
"Mr. Vance, do you have a statement regarding the corporate fraud allegations?"
Julian lowered his head, trying desperately to shield his face from the lenses, but the steel cuffs restricted his movement. He stumbled forward, his expensive blue suit now stained with dust and sweat, a tragic caricature of the arrogant man who had strutted into his boardroom only hours earlier.
The marshals rushed him toward the courthouse steps, pushing through the chaotic media mob. Just as they reached the heavy glass doors, Julian caught sight of a familiar figure standing near the edge of the press corps.
It was Martha, wearing her black jacket, holding a small notepad and watching him with a quiet, sorrowful expression. And beside her, holding a tablet displaying the live broadcast of his arrest, stood Arthur Vance, his former chief legal counsel, now wearing the lapel pin of Amber Holdings.

Julian stopped straining against the marshals for a split second, his breath hitching as Arthur looked directly at him with chilling composure.
Arthur raised his tablet slightly, showing Julian the breaking headline scrolling across the bottom of the screen.
