Chapter 1

Julian stood frozen in the grand foyer, his tailored blue suit straining against the sudden tension in his broad shoulders. His dark brown hair was slightly tousled from hours of pacing, but his eyes burned with a cold, unforgiving fury. The confrontation had been brewing for weeks, fueled by his bottomless arrogance and a catastrophic miscalculation of power. He stared down at Eleanor, the twenty-five-year-old red-haired woman who had shared his name, his bed, and his lavish estate for three years. Her vibrant hair caught the dim chandelier light, contrasting sharply with the deep blue silk dress that draped elegantly over her frame. The heavy diamond necklace resting against her collarbone gleamed, a cruel symbol of the wealth Julian believed he exclusively controlled.

"You’re not my wife," Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the marble floors with venomous intensity. "You’re the maid now. Earn your keep!"

Eleanor did not flinch. She stood perfectly still, her breathing steady and controlled. A subtle, almost imperceptible smile touched the corners of her lips. She looked at the man she had loved with a terrifying calmness that seemed to strip away his authority piece by piece.

"All right," Eleanor replied softly, her voice smooth and devoid of any tremor. "I understand perfectly."

Without waiting for another command, Eleanor turned gracefully on her heel. Her hand reached down to the floor, firmly gripping the handle of a bright pink suitcase that sat incongruously against the dark mahogany wainscoting. The sheer audacity of her calm demeanor shattered Julian’s fragile composure.

"Where do you think you’re going with that luggage?" Julian yelled, his voice cracking with sudden disbelief and rising panic as he watched her pivot away from him.

Nearby, Martha, the fifty-year-old housekeeper wearing her standard black jacket, froze in horror. Her hands flew up to cover her mouth, her eyes wide with shock as she realized the catastrophic mistake Julian had just made.

Eleanor paused, turning her head back just enough to meet his frantic gaze. Her expression remained completely composed, her blue eyes devoid of warmth or hesitation.

"I don’t live here anymore," Eleanor said quietly. "And neither does your wife."

Julian scoffed, stepping forward. "You think you can bluff me? Walk out that door, and you won't get a single penny. You'll leave with just that cheap suitcase."

Eleanor didn't blink. She turned fully, the pink suitcase rolling effortlessly behind her. As she reached the massive oak front doors, Martha rushed forward, whispering a desperate warning that Julian immediately brushed aside.

"You'll crawl back by morning," Julian sneered, though a bead of sweat rolled down his temple.

Eleanor pushed the heavy door open, stepping out into the cool evening air. Before the door clicked shut behind her, she turned back one last time. "Julian, you haven't checked the corporate registry today, have you?"
