Chapter 14: Return to the Green Lawn

The morning sun broke over the horizon as the armored SUV rolled back through the shattered iron gates of the Vance estate, casting a warm, golden light across the immaculate green lawn in the backyard garden. The police tape that had cordoned off the property earlier was gone, cleared away by quiet federal agents who understood the unspoken hierarchy of power that governed men like Arthur Vance.
Arthur stepped out of the vehicle first, adjusting the cuffs of his dark blue suit, his posture as straight and unyielding as ever. Clara emerged from the passenger side, taking a deep, shuddering breath of the fresh suburban air, the nightmare of the underground bunker finally beginning to fade into the background.
Raymond climbed out last, stretching his stiff limbs and looking around the manicured garden with an air of amused detachment.
“I have to admit, Artie, you picked a much nicer place to hide out than I did,” Raymond muttered, walking over to inspect the trampled flower beds where Viktor and his thugs had made their initial mistake. “Though your landscaping took a bit of a beating.”
“Flowers grow back,” Arthur said simply, walking across the green lawn toward the patio steps where two small figures were suddenly running toward them with outstretched arms.
