Chapter 11: The Sprinkler Protocol

The bullet fired from Arthur’s Glock struck the heavy copper pipe of the overhead fire suppression system directly above Henderson’s head with a deafening crack, instantly rupturing the seal. A high-pressure geyser of thick, chemical-laden fire retardant foam and water erupted downward, drenching Henderson and blinding him with a blinding white cascade of foam.

Henderson shrieked in surprise, stumbling backward and losing his footing on the slick epoxy floor, the black detonator flying from his grip and skittering across the room into a dark corner.

“Now, Raymond!” Arthur roared, charging forward through the foam deluge.

Raymond vaulted across the wet lab counters with acrobatic speed, intercepting the sliding detonator just as Henderson scrambled desperately toward it on his hands and knees. Raymond planted a heavy combat boot squarely into Henderson’s chest, pinning the director flat onto the wet floor.

Arthur didn't slow down. He sprinted past them straight to the emergency override console of Clara’s holding cell, slamming his palm against the manual biometric scanner and inputting his old master override code from thirty years ago.

The reinforced glass door hissed open with a loud pneumatic release, sliding smoothly into the wall. Clara stumbled out into the room coughing and gasping for fresh air, and Arthur caught her by the shoulders, steadying her trembling frame.

“Are you hurt?” Arthur asked, his stern voice softening just a fraction as he looked into her terrified eyes.

“I’m... I’m okay,” Clara sobbed softly, burying her face against his dark blue suit jacket for a brief, emotional second before pulling back. “The digital drives... they’re backed up on a secure cloud server that activates if my heartbeat drops or if I don't check in every twelve hours. Henderson couldn't wipe them.”

On the floor across the room, Henderson spat water and foam from his mouth, glaring up at Raymond with pure, unadulterated hatred as the tactical knife pressed coldly against his throat.

“You think you’ve won?” Henderson laughed hysterically, his voice echoing off the walls. “Look at the master console behind you, Arthur. You didn't just break into a lab—you triggered the facility’s final protocol. Sector Four is set to self-destruct in five minutes.”

Arthur turned slowly, looking toward the main diagnostic terminal at the back of the laboratory. The screen was flashing a bright, pulsing crimson warning: FACILITY SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE ENGAGED. ESTIMATED TIME TO TOTAL COLLAPSE: 300 SECONDS.

Raymond pressed the knife slightly closer to Henderson’s throat, drawing a thin bead of dark blood. “How do we shut it down, you son of a bitch?”

Henderson grinned maniacally, his eyes wide and unhinged. “You can’t. The override code was permanently erased when you breached the firewall. This entire mountain is coming down, and everyone in it goes straight to the grave.”
