Chapter 3

David stared down at Sarah’s hand on his arm, the panic in her grip transmitting itself directly into his veins. For months, Sarah had managed his finances, guided his career choices, and gently nudged him away from his aging mother under the guise of helping him build an independent life. She had introduced him to high-rolling investors, helped him lease a luxury office space, and assured him that her vast network of corporate connections would soon make him a wealthy man. Yet, as he looked at the genuine terror contorting her features, the carefully constructed facade began to crumble into dust.
"Sarah," David said, his voice hollow. "What litigation is she talking about? What did I actually sign?"
Before Sarah could formulate a soothing lie, Clara stepped forward, placing the manila envelope on the coffee table between them. She pulled out a single sheet of paper covered in dense, formal paragraphs.
"Your dear Sarah neglected to mention her previous employment history," Clara stated calmly, smoothing the paper with her thumb. "Or perhaps she forgot to tell you about the federal securities fraud investigation currently targeting the shell company she operated under her maiden name. When you signed those papers this morning, David, you didn't just authorize a property transfer. You designated yourself as the primary managing partner of Horizon Holdings—the very entity currently being audited by the Department of Justice."
Sarah released David’s arm as if he had suddenly caught fire. She backed away toward the front door, her chest heaving, her eyes darting between Clara and the heavy oak exit. "You’re insane," Sarah spat out, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "This is a fabrication. An old woman with too much time and a grudge."
"Is it?" Clara asked, lifting her gaze to meet Sarah’s frantic eyes. "My husband spent four decades defending clients against corporate embezzlement, Sarah. Do you really think he wouldn't investigate the woman his son brought home for Sunday dinner? We knew about Horizon Holdings six months ago. We simply waited to see how far your greed would push my son."

David felt the room tilt sideways. He looked from his mother to the woman he had planned to marry, the woman who had promised him a golden future. "You used me," David whispered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "All of it—the apartment, the investments, the push to sell this house—it was all a way to shift your liabilities onto my shoulders."
Sarah stopped backing away, her expression hardening from panic into pure, venomous contempt. She straightened her cream blouse with a sharp, jerky movement. "You are weak, David. You wanted success without work, wealth without risk. I merely gave you the vehicle to achieve your pathetic ambitions. If you were too stupid to read what you signed, you deserve every federal investigator coming through your front door tomorrow morning."
