The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the suburban sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep indigo. The guests gradually departed with warm handshakes, heartfelt congratulations, and boxes of Ethan’s artisan pastries, leaving the Victorian house wrapped in its familiar, comforting silence. David and Clara stood together on the front porch, watching the evening stars begin to emerge through the gathering dusk.
The transition from the angry, arrogant man who had once shouted down his mother in that very living room to the grounded, purposeful attorney standing there now was complete. He had lost his illusions, his superficial network of opportunistic associates, and his false ambitions; in return, he had gained something infinitely more valuable—his integrity, his mother’s enduring trust, and a life built on absolute truth and mutual respect.
Clara turned toward the front door, pausing with her hand on the brass knob. "Come inside, David. The evening air is getting cool."
