Chapter 14

The old man—the Founder—slowly lowered his hand from the golden retriever’s head and stood up from the floral sofa. As he rose, his body seemed to stretch, his silhouette blurring and shifting in the dim, flickering light of the old television set.
"A cage?" The Founder’s voice echoed, no longer sounding like a single person, but rather like a chorus of dozens of voices speaking in unison—men, women, and children all blending together in a haunting harmony. "No, Mark. This is a sanctuary. Out there in the world, people age, they suffer, they die. Up there in those houses, time decays everything. But down here? Down here, we preserve you. We keep you safe from the rot."
The golden retriever on the sofa stood up, stretched lazily, and trotted over to Mark, letting out a soft, happy whine as it nudged Mark’s hand with its wet nose.
"Buster," Mark breathed in relief, kneeling down to stroke the dog’s golden fur, feeling the warm, steady thumping of its heart.
"You see?" The Founder smiled, stepping closer, his form now towering over them like a shifting pillar of shadow and bone. "You can stay here with us, boys. The door upstairs is sealed forever now. The surface world has already forgotten you. Your mortgage is paid, your jobs are closed, your lives up there are finished. You belong to the foundation now."
David crawled over to Mark, grabbing his arm with desperate strength. "Don't listen to him, Mark! It's a trick! It's a trap to keep us down here forever!"
Mark looked at his brother, then looked back at the colossal chamber stretching out into infinity, filled with the flickering shadows of forgotten memories and lost years. He stood up slowly, facing the Founder with a steady, unblinking gaze.
"You're right," Mark said softly, his voice echoing across the vast stone hall. "The surface world forgot us. But we didn't forget who we are."
Before the Founder could react, Mark reached down and grabbed the black leather collar still clutched in his hand. He thrust it forward, shouting, "Buster, find the door!"
The golden retriever didn't hesitate. With a sharp bark, the dog turned and bolted away from the floral sofa, running straight toward a dark corner of the colossal chamber where a single, old-fashioned wooden ladder led straight up into a jagged fracture in the stone ceiling.

"Stop them!" the Founder roared, his voice transforming into a deafening shriek as the entire underground chamber began to violently shake and collapse around them.
Mark and David sprinted after the dog, dodging falling chunks of stone and snapping roots as the foundation of the house literally began to tear itself apart from the inside out.
