Chapter 1

Mark stared down at the golden retriever, his chest tightening with an unfamiliar spike of adrenaline. The hallway was dead silent except for the low hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen behind them.
"Buster, come here," Mark said softly, his voice barely cutting through the dense night air.
The golden retriever did not move an inch. He lay flat on the polished wooden floor, his white muzzle pressed directly against the small sliver of darkness beneath the closed white door.
Mark frowned, taking a hesitant step closer. He shone the smartphone flashlight down, the beam cutting a harsh white swath across the scuffed floorboards.
"Did you hear that?" Mark asked, his tone shifting from casual confusion to sharp suspicion.
Buster let out a low, vibrating whimper that seemed to bubble up from deep inside his chest. It wasn't a bark or a growl; it was the sound of a dog sensing something fundamentally unnatural.
Mark knelt slowly, his joints popping in the quiet hallway. He reached out and placed a warm hand on the dog’s golden spine, feeling the rapid, erratic thumping of the animal’s heart.
"That’s strange," Mark whispered quietly, his eyes darting from the dog's tense ears up to the pristine, unbroken surface of the white door.
He had lived in this suburban house for ten years. He bought it as a foreclosure, completely gutted it, and rebuilt every wall, every pipe, and every electrical wire with his own hands. There was no room here. There was no closet tucked away in this central corridor. The blueprints he had memorized a decade ago showed only a solid load-bearing partition between the guest bathroom and the hallway.
Yet, right now, as he held the smartphone flashlight steady, the beam illuminating the polished brass doorknob, he heard it again.

It was a faint, rhythmic scratching sound coming from the other side.
Mark froze, his breath catching in his throat. The scratching stopped abruptly, replaced by the unmistakable sound of a heavy metal latch sliding slowly into place from within.
