Chapter 15

The morning sun broke blindingly through the rusted iron slats of the drainage grate, casting long, warm golden stripes across the damp concrete floor of the municipal harbor exit. Julian pushed the heavy grating outward with a steady, practiced heave, letting the fresh, salt-tinged breeze sweep into the dark tunnel. He crawled out first, turning back immediately to lift seven-year-old Leo safely up into the sunlight.

Leo blinked against the sudden brightness, clutching the light beige blanket to his chest. Inside the folds, the newborn let out a soft, contented sigh, its tiny fingers unfurling in the warmth of the new day. The light blue polo shirt Leo wore was stiff with dried mud, but his face was remarkably calm, illuminated by a genuine, untroubled smile for the first time since they had entered the nightmare.

Evelyn scrambled out behind them, brushing soot and dust from her tattered lab coat, her chest heaving as she took a deep, shuddering breath of the open air. She looked out over the sparkling waters of the harbor, where cargo ships moved quietly toward the open sea under a clear, endless blue sky.

“It’s over,” Evelyn whispered, leaning against a concrete seawall as the sheer weight of the past forty-eight hours finally caught up with her. “The data was completely purged when the server core blew. The board has no access codes left, and without the biometric beacon, we’re effectively ghosts.”

Julian stood tall beside them, his athletic frame silhouetted against the morning horizon. His dark gray tailored suit was completely ruined—torn at the shoulder, stained with soot and water, and missing its patterned pocket square—yet he had never stood taller or felt more complete. He reached up, running a hand through his short dark fade haircut, feeling the cool ocean wind wash away the grime of the underground facility.

Leo walked over to Julian, looking up with wide, trusting eyes. “Are we going to be safe now, Julian? Will we have a real home?”
