Chapter 13

The silence inside the sprawling, concrete-lined filtration plant became absolute, suffocatingly heavy as the distant scrape of combat boots echoed down the overhead access shafts. Julian stood motionless, his tactical sidearm still locked dead on Commander David Vance’s chest. The flickering amber glow of the terminal cast long, fractured shadows across Julian’s tailored, soot-stained dark gray suit, highlighting the intense, unyielding fury in his eyes.

“You think I’ll just hand them over after everything you’ve put them through?” Julian’s voice was low, vibrating with a controlled rage that made even David’s confident smile falter for a fraction of a second.

“It isn’t a negotiation, Julian,” David replied smoothly, keeping his hands half-raised in a non-threatening posture while his eyes darted toward the console. “If my heart stops beating, the seismic charges wired into the foundation columns beneath us detonate within forty-five seconds. You, Evelyn, the boy, and that little biological key will all be buried under three hundred tons of concrete and steel.”

Behind Julian, seven-year-old Leo let out a soft, terrified whimper, burying his face deeper into the folds of the light beige blanket where the newborn rested. “Julian... don't let them take her. Please.”

Evelyn stepped out from the knee-well of the console, her face hardened with a desperate, calculating resolve. She didn't look at her brother; her eyes were fixed entirely on the blinking data streams on the monitor before her. “David is bluffing about the primary charge array, Julian. Look at the telemetry stream on the secondary screen.”

David’s smile vanished instantly. His head whipped around toward his sister with a sharp, dangerous glare. “Evelyn, don't.”

“The seismic charges aren't wired to his heartbeat,” Evelyn continued, her voice rising steadily as her fingers flew across the dusty keyboard with astonishing speed. “They're hardcoded to the facility's main server core—which means if we can reroute the newborn's bio-signature encryption key through the local relay right now, we can disable the detonation sequence before his team reaches the floor.”

“Do it!” Julian shouted, shifting his stance to cover both David and the overhead access shafts.

With a sudden burst of speed, David lunged forward, drawing a concealed combat knife from his tactical harness with blinding reflexes. But Julian was faster; he pivoted on his heel, using the momentum of his athletic frame to slam the heavy steel butt of his sidearm straight into David’s jaw. The impact echoed like a cracking branch, sending David crashing hard onto the concrete floor with a violent thud.

Evelyn slammed the final execution key on the keyboard. A deafening electronic shriek filled the room as the main monitor flashed a brilliant, blinding green, overriding the countdown timer with a permanent system lock.

At that exact moment, the heavy metal door at the end of the maintenance tunnel burst open, and three heavily armed tactical operatives poured into the room, raising their weapons directly toward Julian.
