Chapter 8 - The Descent

The muffled sound of a heavy shoulder slamming against the pantry door shook the entire shelving unit, sending jars of canned peaches crashing to the floor in a shower of sticky glass. Mark fired three rapid rounds directly through the wooden panel at chest height. A muffled grunt of pain echoed from the kitchen, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the linoleum floor.

"Move! Now!" Mark screamed, grabbing David by the collar of his trench coat and hauling him away from the locked service hatch.

David didn't argue. He slammed his elbow against a concealed emergency release lever hidden behind a box of cereal. With a loud, pneumatic hissing sound, the back wall of the pantry slid inward, revealing a vertical shaft illuminated by the dim, flickering green glow of a descending service lift.

Sarah didn't wait to be told twice. She scrambled through the opening, clutching Leo tightly in her arms as they tumbled onto the metal floor of the cage-like elevator car. Leo let out a terrified cry, his face buried deep in the fabric of his mother’s sweatshirt, his stuffed bunny left forgotten on the pantry floor amid the shattered glass.

"Mark, get in!" David yelled, diving through the narrow opening just as a burst of automatic gunfire chewed through the upper frame of the pantry door, sending splinters raining down over their heads.

Mark leaped backward into the elevator car, his gun raised, and slammed his palm against the downward descent button on the interior control panel. With a metallic shudder, the heavy steel gate slid shut, and the elevator began its rapid, stomach-dropping plunge into the subterranean depths of the building.

The darkness of the shaft rushed past them in a dizzying blur. The only light came from the sickly green status monitor on the wall, casting eerie shadows across their strained, exhausted faces. For a long moment, the only sound was the heavy mechanical grinding of the cables and the ragged breathing of the four occupants trapped inside the metal cage.

Sarah slumped against the wire mesh wall, her eyes fixed on the empty space in her arms where Leo had been clinging just moments ago. She looked up at Mark, her face streaked with tears and dirt.

"You saved us," she whispered, her voice broken and disbelieving. "After everything I lied about, after everything I brought to your doorstep... you still saved us."

Mark didn't look at her. He kept his back pressed against the opposite wall, his weapon still gripped tightly in his hand, his eyes locked on David Vance. The man with the green eyes stood on the other side of the small car, his expression unreadable as he stared down at the floor.

"Don't thank him yet, Sarah," David said quietly, his voice cutting through the mechanical hum of the elevator. "He hasn't heard the real reason why the Directorate is hunting us. And he certainly doesn't know what’s actually coded into the DNA of the boy sitting between us."

Mark’s head snapped toward David, his eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "What are you talking about?"

Before David could answer, the elevator came to a sudden, violent halt with a sickening screech of metal, plunging them into absolute, pitch-black silence.
