Chapter 14 - The Final Stand

The rain began to fall in cold, stinging sheets, blurring the harsh beam of the helicopter's spotlight as it swept across the wooden pier. Mark stood squarely in the center of the walkway, his feet planted wide, his grip on his firearm rock-solid despite the freezing wind and the roaring downdraft of the rotor blades.
The operative who had dropped from the helicopter moved with terrifying, mechanical efficiency. Clad in unmarked black tactical gear with a full-face visor, he raised a heavy-caliber rifle, sighting directly at Mark’s chest.
"Step aside, civilian," a computerized, synthesized voice crackled through a tactical loudspeaker mounted on the aircraft’s hull. "Surrender the biological asset immediately."
"You want him?" Mark shouted back over the deafening roar of the engine, his voice echoing with a fierce, unbreakable resolve. "You’ll have to go through me first."
Before the operative could squeeze the trigger, a sharp, deafening crack echoed from the motorboat bobbing beside the pier. A single, perfectly placed round from David’s weapon struck the operative’s shoulder armor, spinning him sideways and sending his rifle clattering into the rushing river below.
"Mark! Get in the boat!" David roared, keeping his weapon trained on the hovering helicopter above as the pilot scrambled to adjust his angle for a retaliatory strike.
Mark didn't look back. He sprinted down the remaining planks of the pier, diving headfirst into the rocking hull of the motorboat just as a burst of suppression fire chewed into the wooden pilings behind him, sending a shower of splinters into the dark water.
"Hold on!" David yelled, slamming the throttle forward.
The boat surged ahead with a violent lurch, its bow lifting out of the water as it accelerated into the fast-flowing current of the river, leaving the pier and the hovering helicopter behind in a cloud of spray and exhaust.
Sarah pulled Leo down into the floorboards of the boat, wrapping her arms around him to shield him from the biting wind and the freezing rain. Leo clutched his hands together tightly, his eyes wide and fixed on Mark, who sat at the stern of the boat, staring back up at the receding helicopter until it vanished entirely into the grey clouds above.
The silence that settled over the boat as they sped down the center of the wide river was profound. The roaring engine and the splashing water were the only sounds in a world that had suddenly grown impossibly large and terrifyingly quiet.
Sarah slowly raised her head, looking across the open hull at Mark. Her face was bruised, streaked with dirt and dried tears, her dark sweatshirt soaked through to the skin.
"You didn't have to come with us," Sarah whispered, her voice trembling in the cold air. "You could have stayed in the apartment. You could have let them take us and gone back to your life."
Mark looked down at his hands, raw and red from the cold water and the rough concrete of the drainage tunnels. He looked across the boat at Leo, who had finally closed his eyes, falling into an exhausted, dreamless sleep against his mother’s shoulder.
"I didn't have a life before tonight, Sarah," Mark said softly, his voice carrying a quiet, definitive finality. "I just had a very comfortable lie. But right now... right now, I have a son who needs someone to keep him safe from the monsters."
David sat at the helm, steering the boat skillfully through the widening river mouth toward the distant horizon where the grey sky was finally beginning to break into pale, pale streaks of morning light. He glanced back at Mark, offering a brief, almost imperceptible nod of mutual respect between two men who had fought across an impossible divide.

As the boat cleared the final bend in the river and entered the vast, open expanse of the coastal bay, the silver metal briefcase—still sitting forgotten on the floorboards where Sarah had dropped it—clicked open slightly in the wind, revealing the passport and the photographs inside, before a sudden gust of ocean air blew the pages away into the churning wake, leaving the past behind forever.
