Chapter 7 - Sabotage in the Sub-Level

The live camera feed on the secure terminal glowed with an eerie green hue, casting harsh shadows across Charlotte’s face in the dark server closet. On the screen, the three masked figures moved with practiced, military-like precision through the sprawling basement sub-level of the Grand Meridian. One of them shouldered a heavy aluminum case, while another carried what appeared to be a commercial-grade industrial explosive rig.

“Martha, look at this,” Charlotte said, her voice tight with urgency as she pointed toward the monitor. “They’re heading straight for the primary power sub-station.”

Martha crowded into the narrow doorway, peering over Charlotte’s shoulder. Her breath hitched. “That grid controls the entire block, including the municipal water pumps and the emergency generators. If they blow that transformer, the hotel goes completely dark, and the backup systems will fail instantly.”

“It’s not just about a blackout,” Charlotte realized, her sharp mind connecting the dots with terrifying clarity. “If the power fails, the biometric server locks down, and all digital records of the corporate fraud are wiped clean in an automatic security purge.”

The encrypted flash drive connected to the terminal continued to download files in the background, a progress bar steadily creeping toward eighty percent. But the saboteurs on the screen had already reached the heavy steel door of the sub-station. One of them raised a heavy thermal cutting torch, its bright blue flame sputtering to life with a sharp hiss that even the camera’s ambient microphone seemed to capture.

“We have to stop them,” Martha insisted, her hands gripping the doorframe. “I know a service stairwell that bypasses the main elevators. We can reach the sub-level before they breach the door.”

“No,” Charlotte said firmly, shaking her head as she watched the progress bar hit eighty-five percent. “If we leave now, the download will abort, and we’ll lose the master decryption keys. We need to lock the sub-level doors remotely using the mainframe override.”

Charlotte’s fingers flew across the keyboard, inputting a series of administrative commands to override the digital locks on the basement sector. On the screen, a red warning prompt flashed: Sector 9 Manual Override Restricted. Authorization Required.

“Damn it,” Charlotte muttered under her breath. “The system requires a secondary sign-off from a registered executive who isn't currently under federal arrest.”

Martha’s eyes widened as she remembered the hotel’s administrative hierarchy. “David. The manager we left in the lobby. He has emergency override credentials tied to his thumbprint.”

Without a second thought, Charlotte grabbed her phone from her pocket and dialed the front desk intercom line. It rang twice before a shaky, tearful voice answered on the other end.

“Front desk... David speaking,” the man whimpered, sounding utterly broken.

“David, listen to me very carefully,” Charlotte commanded, her tone brooking no argument. “There is an active sabotage team in the basement sub-level trying to blow the main grid. You have the administrative credentials to lock them out remotely. If you want to stay out of a federal penitentiary for the rest of your life, you will get down to the security console right now and lock Sector 9!”

There was a long, agonizing pause on the line, filled only with David’s heavy, panicked breathing.

“I... I don’t know the code anymore,” David stammered. “They changed the administrative protocols yesterday afternoon. Only Eleanor’s father had the master override key.”

Before Charlotte could respond, the progress bar on the terminal screen hit one hundred percent, and a new window popped open, displaying a pre-recorded video file titled: Welcome Home, Charlotte.
