Chapter 13 - The Magistrate’s Call

The sharp chime of the secure terminal cut through the quiet restoration of the penthouse suite. Charlotte turned away from the floor-to-ceiling windows, walking back across the plush wool carpet toward the mahogany desk. The incoming video call request blinked steadily on the high-definition monitor: Magistrate Richard Vance—Emergency Probate Division.

Martha stepped closer, her expression tightening with renewed caution. “Richard Vance? He’s your father’s estranged cousin. He presided over the initial probate court hearings six years ago when the estate was declared abandoned.”

Charlotte stared at the blinking prompt. The name carried a bitter history; Richard Vance had looked her dead in the eye when she was sixteen, dismissing her claims as the grief-stricken delusions of a traumatized teenager before rubber-stamping the Sterling family’s fraudulent takeover.

“Accept the call,” Charlotte instructed quietly, her voice unwavering.

She pressed her thumb against the biometric scanner, and the screen flickered to life. The face of Magistrate Richard Vance appeared on the monitor. He looked older, his hair completely silver, sitting in a wood-paneled home office filled with towering stacks of legal briefs. He wasn't wearing his judicial robes; he looked tired, cornered, and deeply unsettled.

“Charlotte,” Richard said, clearing his throat awkwardly as he looked directly into the camera lens. “I received the federal asset freeze notifications and the preliminary forensic audits from your terminal link. I... I had to reach out directly.”

“You had six years to look at those forensic audits, Richard,” Charlotte said, her voice dropping to a chilling, low register that made the magistrate flinch. “Instead, you signed the papers that threw a sixteen-year-old girl onto the street with nothing.”

Richard held up a hand defensively, looking off-camera as if checking to ensure his doors were locked. “I was pressured by Arthur Sterling’s legal team, Charlotte. They presented falsified death certificates and forged financial liabilities that left the probate court zero legal alternative. It was a rigged system from the top down.”

“A rigged system you happily profited from,” Martha interjected sharply, stepping into the camera’s frame. “You knew Arthur Vance’s signature better than anyone, Richard. You knew those documents were fraudulent.”

The magistrate swallowed hard, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. “Listen to me—both of you. I’m not calling to argue ethics. I’m calling because the syndicate isn’t going away just because Arthur Sterling was arrested. They have a contingency protocol. If the full ledger you recovered is processed through the federal courts tonight, the entire regional banking infrastructure tied to those shell companies will collapse, taking half the city's municipal funds down with it.”

Charlotte leaned forward, placing her hands flat on the mahogany desk. Her eyes locked onto the screen with laser focus. “Are you threatening me, Richard, or are you warning me?”

“I’m telling you to cut a deal,” Richard urged, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper. “Hand over the original leather ledger to the district attorney’s office quietly, accept a multi-million-dollar cash buyout for the Meridian property, and walk away clean. If you fight them in open court, you won't survive the week.”

Charlotte stared at her cousin in silence for a long, agonizing moment. She reached into her pocket, pulled out the silver vintage locket, and placed it right in the center of the desk, in full view of the camera.

“Tell the syndicate,” Charlotte said coldly, “that I’ve spent the last six years surviving on the streets while they lived in stolen luxury. I’m not walking away for a payout.”

Before Richard could respond, the terminal screen suddenly glitched, flashing a blinding cascade of error codes as the entire video feed cut to a dead black screen.

Simultaneously, the heavy oak doors of the penthouse suite swung violently open, revealing three federal agents with drawn weapons and an unexpected visitor standing behind them.
