Chapter 6

The hospital hallway grew deathly quiet, save for the hum of the overhead ventilation unit. Julian held Elena’s gaze, refusing to blink, refusing to step back. The threat implicit in her words was massive—she was signaling that her corruption was not an isolated incident, but a systemic web woven deep into the legal and medical infrastructure of the city. Yet, standing there with the falsified lab report clutched in his hand, Julian felt a strange sense of liberation. The fear of her disapproval, which had governed his choices for a decade, had finally evaporated.

“If the system is built on fabricated lives and stolen futures, Elena, then it deserves to burn to the ground,” Julian said quietly. His voice carried a finality that brooked no argument.

Sarah wiped a stray tear from her cheek, her hands steadying as she gripped the handle of the stroller. The fog of self-doubt that had crippled her decision-making for years was gone, replaced by a cold, sharp clarity. She looked at Dr. Harrison, her voice firm and resolute. “What do you need from us to make sure this file cannot be buried or altered by her legal team again?”

Dr. Harrison adjusted his white coat, his expression grim but resolute. “I need formal statements from both of you corroborating the timeline of your medical consultations at the subsidiary clinic. I’ve already uploaded the digital backups to an encrypted server outside the hospital’s jurisdiction. But state investigators require victim testimony to bypass the corporate indemnity clauses that protect the board members.”

Elena’s eyes flashed with sudden danger. She reached into her white suit jacket, her hand sliding toward her smartphone, likely attempting to signal her legal counsel or crisis management firm. Before her fingers could clear her pocket, Julian stepped forward and gently, but firmly, gripped her wrist, pinning her hand in place.

“No phones, Elena,” Julian said, his voice flat and commanding. “The era of you managing the narrative from behind a desk is officially over. You stay right here until hospital security and state investigators arrive.”

“You are making a catastrophic mistake, Julian,” Elena hissed through gritted teeth, her fingers twitching against his grip. She didn’t scream, she didn’t cry—her composure was a weapon she refused to drop, though the strain was visible in the tight cords of her neck. “You think you’re playing the hero, but you’re just cutting off your own lifeline. Every asset, every trust fund, every hidden offshore account that has sustained your lifestyle since the divorce is tied directly to my family’s portfolio. You sink me, you sink yourself.”

“I’d rather sleep in a gutter knowing who I am than live another day in a gilded cage built on your lies,” Julian replied without hesitation. He released her wrist, stepping back as if touching her had burned him.

Dr. Harrison pulled a small encrypted flash drive from his pocket and held it up. “The state investigator is waiting in my office on the fourth floor. Let’s move before the internal legal department catches wind of the server ping.”
