Chapter 4 - Descent into the Sub-Level

The heavy thud echoed through the floorboards, vibrating straight up through Marcus’s boots. The air in the laundry room suddenly turned ice-cold, smelling faintly of damp earth and stale copper—a scent that had no business existing inside a modern suburban home.

“Stay here,” Marcus ordered, his voice carrying the firm authority of a father who refused to let panic take the wheel. He reached past the washing machine and grabbed a heavy metal flashlight off the shelf.

Clara reached out, her fingers catching the sleeve of his gray henley. “Marcus, don't go down there alone. Whatever is in that basement... it isn't just plumbing.”

“I have to check the breaker box anyway,” Marcus lied smoothly, though his tight jaw betrayed his terror. “Zuri, keep your phone recording. If anything moves in the hallway, you run straight out the front door.”

Zuri nodded, her knuckles white as she gripped her smartphone like a lifeline. Maya remained seated on the washing machine, her small fingers now peeling the shell off the hard-boiled egg in agonizingly slow, deliberate strips, never breaking eye contact with the dark doorway leading to the basement stairs.

Marcus pulled open the door to the basement. The wooden steps groaned beneath his weight as he descended into the pitch blackness. The flashlight beam cut through swirling dust motes, illuminating stacks of storage bins, old holiday decorations, and the exposed concrete foundation walls of the house.

At the far end of the basement, near the crawlspace access panel, something moved.

Marcus froze, holding his breath. The beam of the flashlight locked onto a small pile of fresh dirt heaped neatly in the center of the concrete floor. Protruding from the dirt was a child's silver charm bracelet—the exact one Maya had lost six months ago during a family camping trip fifty miles away.

“How did that get here?” Marcus muttered to himself, stepping closer.

As his boot hit a patch of moisture on the floor, the overhead single-bulb light in the basement flickered violently and died, plunging him into absolute, suffocating darkness. Simultaneously, the heavy basement door slammed shut at the top of the stairs with a deafening crash, locking automatically from the outside.
