Chapter 10 - The Breach

The sudden pitch-black darkness was absolute, broken only by the faint, eerie glow of Zuri’s smartphone screen near the front entryway. Marcus released Clara, stumbling backward against the kitchen counter as heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed across the hardwood floor of the foyer.

“He’s inside,” Zuri whimpered from the hallway, her flashlight app casting a blinding, narrow beam toward the front door.

Marcus strained his eyes in the gloom. Standing in the doorway of the kitchen, outlined by the pale moonlight filtering through the front windows, was the silhouette of the man from the porch. He stepped forward into the kitchen, his gray henley and dark jeans matching Marcus’s own reflection so perfectly that it felt like looking into a distorted funhouse mirror.

“You’re standing in my kitchen,” the double said. His voice was identical to Marcus’s, yet it carried an eerie, hollow resonance, as if spoken inside an empty metal pipe.

“Get out of my house!” Marcus yelled, lunging forward with a burst of adrenaline. He threw a heavy right hook straight at the intruder’s jaw.

His fist connected with solid bone and skin, but the impact sent a sickening shockwave up his arm, as if he had punched a concrete wall. The double didn't even flinch. He slowly turned his head back toward Marcus, a dark bruise forming instantly on his cheek where Marcus had struck him—though Marcus felt the exact same bruising sensation flare up on his own face.

Clara and Maya sat at the table in the dark, watching the confrontation with calm, indifferent detachment, rhythmically tapping their fingers against the wooden surface.

“You can't hurt him, Dad,” Zuri shouted from the hallway, holding her phone up high. “He’s tied to the deed! Look at the floor!”

Marcus glanced down at the hardwood floor beneath the intruder's boots. There was no shadow stretching out behind him. Instead, a sprawling network of black, vein-like roots was visibly pulsing upward through the grain of the wood, wrapping around the double’s ankles and anchoring him directly to the house's foundation.

The double smiled—a wide, joyless stretching of the lips that didn't reach his eyes.

“The foundation needed a new tenant,” the double said, reaching out a cold hand and grabbing Marcus by the throat with terrifying speed.
