Chapter 5

The guest house was clean, comfortable, and thoroughly humiliating. Located fifty yards down the manicured gravel path from the main manor, it lacked the grandeur, the history, and most importantly, the absolute power of the primary estate. Evelyn stood by the tall arched window, holding a crystal glass of scotch that she had poured from the small minibar, watching the warm lights of the main house flicker through the gathering evening dusk.

Her phone buzzed on the mahogany coffee table, shattering the oppressive silence of the room. She snatched it up instantly, hoping for a message from her personal lawyer or one of her high-society allies. Instead, it was an encrypted text from an unknown number: The corporate board has received the first batch of audit files. They are calling an emergency vote for tomorrow morning.

Evelyn cursed under her breath, tossing the phone onto the sofa. She had spent a decade climbing to the top of the local social hierarchy, marrying into the prestigious Vance family, and systematically eliminating anyone who stood in her path. She had envisioned herself as the undisputed matriarch of the estate, reigning from the gold-ornamented throne chair while lesser mortals scrambled for her favor. Now, she was exiled to the guest house like an inconvenient servant, her financial lifelines cut off one by one.

There was a soft knock at the front door. Evelyn stiffened, hoping against hope that Julian had reconsidered his position, or perhaps that a loyal ally had come to offer rescue. She pulled the door open sharply.

It was Clara, holding a small silver tray with a single envelope resting in the center. The young maid’s expression was polite, professional, and entirely devoid of warmth.

"What is this?" Evelyn demanded, crossing her arms over her chest.

"Mr. Vance asked me to deliver this to you, Madam," Clara said evenly, keeping a respectful distance. "It's an itemized inventory of your personal belongings currently residing in the master suite. You have until noon tomorrow to arrange for a courier to collect them. The locks on the main house have been recoded."

Evelyn reached out and snatched the envelope from the tray, her fingernails scraping against the cold metal. "Tell Julian he can take his inventory and shove it down his—"

"I am only following instructions, Madam," Clara interrupted quietly, her voice steady and unyielding. "Have a quiet evening."

Before Evelyn could retort, Clara turned and walked briskly down the gravel path, her footsteps crunching rhythmically in the dark. Evelyn slammed the door shut, tearing open the envelope. Inside was not just an inventory list, but a formal restraining order prohibiting her from entering the main house or contacting Margaret Vance directly. Julian was not just pushing her out; he was systematically erasing her legal and physical presence from the estate.
