Chapter 10

The drive back to the estate was silent. The black sedan glided through the wrought-iron gates, past the sprawling lawns and the manicured rose gardens that Margaret had tended for decades. Julian looked out the window, watching the familiar landscape unfold. The dark cloud that had hung over the manor for the past two years finally seemed to be lifting.

When the car pulled up to the main entrance, Margaret was waiting on the porch, seated comfortably in a high-backed wooden armchair, her beige blouse neat and her pearl necklace catching the afternoon sun. Clara and Hannah stood quietly behind her, holding trays of fresh lemonade.

Julian stepped out of the car, walking up the stone steps to stand before his mother. The tension in his shoulders finally dissipated, replaced by a deep, settling calm.

"It’s over," Julian said quietly, resting his hand on the railing. "The court upheld the asset recovery order. She is legally barred from the property, and her corporate access has been permanently revoked."

Margaret looked up at her son, her eyes soft with maternal pride. "Legal victories are necessary, Julian, but true healing happens inside these walls. How are the staff?"

"Relieved," Julian replied, offering a faint smile. "Marcus tells me morale hasn't been this high in years. People are finally breathing again."

"Good," Margaret said, gesturing for Clara to pour a glass of lemonade for Julian. "Power is not about holding a silver chain or sitting on a gold throne. It is about service, responsibility, and protecting the people who trust you. Evelyn wanted the crown without the burden of the kingdom."

Julian took the glass of lemonade, thanking Clara with a warm nod that the young maid gratefully returned. "She thought control was the same thing as strength. She never understood that the true strength of this family lies in our shared history and our mutual respect."

"And in knowing when to let go," Margaret added, looking toward the distant guest house where Evelyn was currently packing her final belongings under the watchful eye of a sheriff's deputy. "Pity her, Julian. A person who defines their entire worth by material dominance is the poorest soul on earth."
