Chapter 8

That evening, as Helena finally returned to her apartment, the exhaustion of the past week caught up with her all at once. The sleek, minimalist interior of her living room felt hollow and quiet. She poured a glass of water, walking over to the large bay window that looked out over the glittering lights of the city. The threat Agent Miller had issued lingered in her mind like a cold shadow. Taking down Elizabeth was only the beginning; the systemic corruption of the old guard was woven deeply into the political and financial fabric of the city.

Her phone rang, shattering the quiet stillness of the room. She looked at the caller ID and saw an unknown, restricted number. Hesitating for a moment, she pressed accept and held the phone to her ear.

“Helena,” a familiar, gravelly voice whispered through the speaker. It was Elizabeth. Despite the crushing defeat in the boardroom and her sudden exile, the matriarch’s voice carried an eerie, unyielding calm. “You think you’ve won a great victory, don't you? You think by handing our ledgers over to federal prosecutors, you’ve cleaned house and saved the family legacy.”

Helena gripped the phone tightly, her knuckles turning white. “I did what you refused to do, Elizabeth,” Helena answered firmly, keeping her voice steady. “You broke the law, betrayed my father’s trust, and tried to erase my existence to protect your own fragile monopoly. You brought this on yourself.”

“I built this empire while your father was still chasing ghosts, Helena!” Elizabeth snapped back, her voice flashing with sudden, sharp heat before regaining its controlled cadence. “You don't understand the compromises required to keep an institution of this scale afloat in a world of sharks. By inviting federal investigators inside our walls, you’ve opened Pandora’s box. Those prosecutors don't care about corporate ethics; they want a high-profile scalp to boost their career statistics. They’ll tear down the entire holding company just to make a headline.”

“Then let them tear it down,” Helena said without flinching. “If the foundation cannot stand on honest ground, it deserves to fall. I won't live in the shadow of your lies anymore, Elizabeth. The grand jury testimony is scheduled for Tuesday, and every single backdated signature and fraudulent wire transfer will be laid out in public view. You can spend the rest of your retirement contemplating the consequences.”

“You are more like me than you care to admit, child,” Elizabeth said softly, a dark note of warning in her tone. “Remember that when the wolves you invited through the front door turn their attention toward you. Goodbye, Helena.”

The line went dead with a sharp click. Helena lowered the phone slowly, her heart pounding against her ribs. She walked over to her desk, opened the top drawer, and pulled out her father’s old leather journal. Flipping to the final pages written in his shaky, declining hand, she searched for guidance in the ink of the man whose memory she had fought so hard to vindicate. The battle was far from over, and the true cost of her inheritance was only beginning to reveal itself.
