Chapter 10

Following her grand jury testimony, Helena returned to the corporate headquarters expecting a brief window of administrative calm. Instead, she found the executive floor in a state of suppressed panic. As she stepped out of the private elevator, Claire hurried toward her, holding a stack of urgent notifications and financial printouts. The lobby was unusually quiet, the ambient hum of productivity replaced by tense whispers among the administrative staff.

“What happened, Claire?” Helena asked, walking briskly toward her corner office while shedding her suit jacket over her arm.

“It’s the market, Helena,” Claire said, her voice shaking slightly as she handed over the printouts. “Within two hours of your testimony leaking to the press, an anonymous short-selling syndicate initiated a massive bear raid on our core stock. Millions of shares were dumped simultaneously, triggering automatic circuit breakers. More importantly, our primary commercial lenders just froze our revolving credit lines pending an immediate risk assessment.”

Helena stopped in her tracks, scanning the frantic numbers on the printout. The retaliatory strike had not come from regulatory bodies or legal filings; it had come from the dark, predatory corners of Wall Street, orchestrated by allies Elizabeth had cultivated over decades in the financial shadows. They were attempting to crush the company financially, forcing an emergency bankruptcy that would wipe out Helena’s majority shares and allow the old guard to buy back the core assets for pennies on the dollar.

“They’re trying to starve us out before the federal indictments can even be handed down,” Helena said quietly, her jaw tightening with grim resolve. She realized that Elizabeth’s parting warning had not been an empty threat. The wolves had indeed turned their attention toward her, weaponizing the very financial markets she had sought to reform.

Helena walked into her office and sat down at the heavy mahogany desk, pulling her laptop toward her. She didn’t panic; panic was a luxury reserved for the unprepared. She began opening encrypted communication channels, reaching out to independent venture partners and institutional investors who had long-standing grievances against the predatory lending practices of the old Pendelton regime. There was capital available, but securing it required immediate, decisive action before the afternoon trading session closed.

“Get Arthur Sterling on the phone immediately,” Helena instructed without looking up from her screen. “Tell him we need to activate our emergency liquidity backstop from the Sterling Family Trust. We’re going to buy back every shorted share on the open market and squeeze the syndicate until they bleed out.”

Claire stared at her for a second, stunned by the sheer audacity of the counterattack, before nodding vigorously and rushing out to execute the order. Helena took a slow, deep breath, feeling the pulse of adrenaline steady in her veins. Elizabeth had taught her how to fight, but Helena was fighting for something far more important than mere power—she was fighting for the survival of everything her father had believed in.
