Chapter 5 - The Secret Beneath the Floorboards

"Arthur," Julian said, his voice tightening defensively as he stared at the screen. "Whatever game you and my mother are playing, it ends now. You can't just evict us based on obsolete paperwork from a dead man."
Arthur leaned back in his leather chair, swirling a glass of amber amber liquid without drinking it. "Obsolete? Julian, your father spent the last three years of his life uncovering the systematic embezzlement of the Vance engineering accounts. And guess whose name was on the transfer receipts?"
Clara stepped into the frame, her eyes flashing with anger. "Are you accusing Julian of financial crimes? That is completely absurd! He was a junior partner back then; he didn't even have signing authority."
"Not Julian, my dear," Arthur replied, his eyes shifting coldly toward Clara. "Your father. Thomas Miller. The man who supposedly died bankrupt in Ohio twenty years ago, leaving you with nothing but a suitcase and a sob story."
Clara’s face lost all color, her lips parting in a silent gasp as she took a violent step backward, colliding against the edge of the dining table. "My father had nothing to do with the Vance accounts. He was an honest accountant!"
"An accountant who wiped out three million dollars of pension funds before faking his own demise and leaving his teenage daughter with a brand-new identity," Arthur said smoothly, tapping a thick file folder against the wooden desk. "Your mother-in-law, Elena, spent twenty years hunting for that money. And she finally found where you hid it."
Julian turned slowly to look at his wife, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Clara... what is he talking about? What money?"
"It’s a lie," Clara whispered, her voice trembling violently as tears welled up in her eyes. "He’s lying to destroy us, Julian. Don't listen to him!"
"Ask her why there is a reinforced concrete vault beneath the basement workshop," Arthur continued, his tone unrelenting. "Ask her why the blueprints for this house don't match the county permits. The money isn't in a Swiss bank account, Julian. It’s buried right beneath your feet."
The video call abruptly disconnected, leaving the room plunged into an oppressive, suffocating silence.
Julian looked down at the floorboards near the basement door, his mind racing through every childhood memory, every locked room, every rule his mother had enforced with absolute, unyielding authority.
"Julian," Clara pleaded, reaching out to touch his arm, her hands shaking uncontrollably. "You believe me, don't you? You know me."
Julian pulled his arm away slowly, his expression hardened by a terrifying new reality. Without a word, he walked to the kitchen, grabbed heavy iron-handled flashlight from the utility drawer, and pried open the locked door leading down into the basement.

As he flicked on the flashlight and descended the creaking wooden stairs toward the dark, damp concrete floor, he noticed something he had never seen before: a fresh seam of gray concrete poured right over the old foundation, sealing a hidden chamber away from the rest of the world.
