Chapter 11 - The Guardian of Maple Street

The rain fell in sheets, drumming a relentless rhythm against the roof of the sprawling Victorian house on Maple Street. Inside, the lights were warm and steady, casting a golden glow across the polished oak floors that Julian had spent years cleaning and maintaining.
Arthur Vance sat at the mahogany dining table, pouring a cup of Earl Grey tea from a silver pot. Across from him sat two children—nine-year-old Leo and seven-year-old Maya—quietly working on a jigsaw puzzle spread out across the table.
"Grandpa Arthur," Maya asked softly, looking up from a piece of the puzzle that didn't quite fit. "When is Daddy coming home?"
Arthur paused, the steam rising from his teacup blurring his vision for a brief second. He set the cup down carefully, his expression softening as he looked at the two children who looked so much like Julian used to look at their age.
"Your father is taking a very long trip, sweetheart," Arthur said gently, his voice devoid of malice. "Just like your grandmother did. Some journeys take time, and people need to learn hard lessons before they can find their way back home."
Leo pushed a puzzle piece into place with a sharp click. "Mom left too. She told us we were going on vacation, but then she got into a big car and didn't say goodbye."
Arthur’s jaw tightened. Clara’s private flight to Zurich hadn't gone as smoothly as she had anticipated. Swiss banking authorities, tipped off by an anonymous international dossier submitted by Elena’s estate managers, had frozen her accounts within minutes of her arrival, leaving her stranded in a luxury hotel with zero access to the stolen millions.
The doorbell rang, cutting through the quiet hum of the house.
Arthur stood up slowly, walking down the hallway and pulling the heavy wooden door open.
Standing on the porch, drenched in rain and shivering beneath a thin jacket, was a woman who looked exhausted, desperate, and broken.
Clara.
Her hair was plastered to her face, her designer handbag ruined by the downpour, her eyes wide with a manic desperation that bore no resemblance to the composed woman who had walked out of the federal courthouse hours earlier.
"Let me in, Arthur," Clara whispered, her teeth chattering as she stepped past him without waiting for an invitation, tracking muddy water across the clean hardwood floor. "They took everything. The Swiss banks locked every account. They said I’m under international investigation."

Arthur closed the front door slowly, turning to face her with a cold, unforgiving stare.
