Chapter 3 - Threshold of Deceit

The cold winter air rushed into the warm foyer, carrying the scent of melting snow as Evelyn Halm stepped fully inside the house. Arthur tried to block her path, his broad shoulders tensing, but Evelyn sidestepped him with practiced ease.
“You are trespassing,” Arthur hissed, grabbing her arm.
Evelyn calmly pulled her coat sleeve from his grip. “I wouldn't do that if I were you, Arthur. The documents in this envelope are registered with the state magistrate. If anything happens to me tonight, an automatic release goes out to three different news outlets.”
Elena stepped out from the dining room, her heart pounding. She adjusted Lily on her hip, her dark coat brushing against her white sweater. “Arthur, let her speak. What does she mean by 'what my parents signed away'?”
Clara hurried into the hallway, her face pale with panic. “Arthur, don't listen to her. This woman is a fraud. She’s trying to extort us.”
“Extort you for what, Clara?” Evelyn asked, her sharp gaze shifting to the older woman. “For a multi-million-dollar trust fund that was quietly dissolved two weeks after Elena’s parents died in that suspicious car crash?”
The words hung in the air like a physical blow. Elena stopped dead in her tracks. “What did you say?”
“You heard me, Elena,” Evelyn replied, holding up the manila envelope. “Your parents didn't die broke. They were wealthy. And someone systematically stripped your inheritance down to the last penny, transferring every asset into a shell corporation managed by none other than your loving father-in-law's legal firm.”
Arthur spun around, his face dark with fury. “She’s lying! Elena, don't believe a word of this professional con artist! She manufactures fake paper trails to shake down families during the holidays!”
“Then prove it, Arthur,” Evelyn challenged, walking toward the dining table and setting the envelope down right next to the crystal wine glasses. “Open the file. Look at the signatures. Your father’s signature is right there on the transfer orders, countersigned by Clara’s family trust.”
Elena looked from Arthur to Clara, searching their faces for reassurance, but what she saw was sheer terror. Clara wouldn't meet her eyes, and Arthur was breathing heavily, his hands clenched into fists.
Slowly, Elena walked forward, setting a sleepy Lily down in Clara’s reluctant arms. With trembling fingers, Elena untied the red string of the manila envelope and pulled out the top document.

The letterhead at the top of the page belonged to Halm & Associates, but the signatures at the bottom belonged to people Elena recognized all too well.
