Chapter 14 - The Trap Is Set

The frigid wind blew through the shattered front window, fluttering the branches of the Christmas tree and chilling the warm living room to the bone.
Sheriff Miller paced near the broken glass, shaking his head. “Elena, using your own home as bait for a corrupt political dynasty is insane. Even with federal backup, I can't guarantee—”
“You don't need to guarantee anything, Sheriff,” Evelyn interrupted, her satellite phone pressed firmly to her ear as she paced near the dining table. “I just spoke to the Assistant U.S. Attorney in Chicago. A federal warrant for racketeering and intimidation of a witness has just been issued for Harrison Jr.”
Clara sat quietly at the table, her hands trembling in her lap. “He won't wait for a warrant, Evelyn. If he thinks you have the Zurich key, he’ll come through that broken window himself before dawn.”
“Good,” Elena said, walking over to the dining table and picking up her father’s leather journal. “Because that’s exactly where we left the decoy key.”
Evelyn stopped pacing, raising an eyebrow. “Decoy key?”
“Arthur’s father was paranoid,” Elena explained, a cold smile touching her lips. “He always kept duplicate lockboxes for his offshore holdings. The real Zurich key is sewn into the lining of Lily’s winter coat. What’s sitting in that velvet box under the tree is a coded flash drive linked directly to the federal prosecutor's secure server.”
Sheriff Miller whistled softly, a grin breaking through his grim expression. “You’re playing high-stakes poker, Elena. Where did you learn that?”
“Growing up with people who taught me how to survive their lies,” Elena replied simply.
She turned to Evelyn. “Tell the federal marshals to position themselves in the utility tunnel and the basement stairwell. Let Harrison Jr. think he’s breaking in to steal back his family’s secrets. The moment he touches that box under the tree, the trap snaps shut.”
Evelyn nodded, speaking rapidly into her phone to coordinate the tactical deployment. Within minutes, muffled footsteps echoed from the basement as federal agents quietly took their positions beneath the floorboards.
The house fell into an eerie, tense silence. The Christmas tree lights twinkled softly against the living room wall, illuminating the shattered glass on the floor like fallen stars.
Elena held Lily tightly in her arms, whispering a quiet lullaby into the toddler's ear, her eyes fixed entirely on the dark, jagged opening of the broken window.
Outside, a sleek black sedan pulled silently up to the curb, its headlights turned off. A shadowy figure stepped out onto the snowy lawn, moving with calculated, predatory stealth toward the house.
