Chapter 8 - The Vault of Secrets

The heavy steel door of the vault loomed before Julian like the entrance to a subterranean tomb. The digital keypad cast a faint blue glow across his face, highlighting the dark circles under his eyes and the disheveled state of his blonde hair. He raised his right hand, pressing his thumb against the biometric scanner with a steady, practiced motion that had once unlocked millions of dollars in corporate assets with a single touch.
The scanner beeped twice—a low, rhythmic warning tone—before flashing a brilliant, steady green.
With a mechanical groan that echoed through the silent archive, the massive locking pins disengaged one by one. The heavy door swung outward on its hydraulic hinges, releasing a faint puff of chilled, sterile air that smelled of old parchment and dormant history.
Katherine stood directly behind Julian, her hands folded neatly over her cream blazer. Arthur Pendelton flanked her left, holding a small flashlight ready to illuminate the interior shelves.
"Go on, Mr. Vance," Katherine prompted quietly, her voice devoid of urgency. "Your grandfather spent forty years ensuring that only a direct bloodline heir with the proper clearance could break the primary seal. Let us see what he left behind for you to inherit."
Julian stepped across the threshold, his shoes clicking against the polished steel floor of the vault. The interior was surprisingly sparse. Unlike the digital servers and crowded filing cabinets of his executive office upstairs, this room contained only a single mahogany pedestal positioned in the exact center of the space. Resting upon the velvet surface of the pedestal was a single, leather-bound volume sealed with a brass padlock bearing the falcon crest of Vance Enterprises.
Julian reached out, his fingers brushing the cool leather of the cover. He looked back over his shoulder at Katherine, confusion etched into every line of his face. 🇷🇺
"Just a book?" Julian asked, his voice echoing slightly in the confined space. "Where are the financial records? Where are the asset portfolios?"
"The asset portfolios were burned in the fire of ninety-two, Julian," Katherine replied, stepping across the threshold and stopping a few feet behind him. "And the financial records were liquidated to pay off your father’s debts twenty years ago. What remains in this room is the only thing that truly matters."
Julian frowned, his hand resting on the brass padlock. "If there are no assets, then what is this?"
"It is the confession your grandfather wrote the night he signed away the company’s moral charter to a syndicate of foreign investors," Katherine said, her tone dropping into a chilling register. "He thought he was buying protection. Instead, he bought a cage. And he left the key around your father’s neck."
Julian felt his pulse spike. He looked down at the brass padlock, noticing for the first time that it didn't require a traditional key. It had a six-digit numerical dial, identical to the combination lock on the industrial safe his father had kept in his private study at home—the safe Julian had never been able to open.
"The combination," Julian muttered, staring at the dials. "My father never told me what it was."
"He didn't know it," Katherine corrected smoothly. "Your grandfather encoded it using the birthday of the only person who refused to sign the syndicate agreement."
Julian turned sharply to face her, his eyes wide in the dim light. "Who?"
Katherine met his gaze without flinching, her expression as hard and unyielding as the steel walls around them.

"Me," she said.
