Chapter 1 - The Trap Laid in Silence

The ambient noise of the upscale restaurant instantly evaporated as Arturia Mendoza finished her provocative statement.

"Three days divorced and already found a rich older man?" Arturia’s voice cut through the heavy air of the dining room with surgical precision, carrying just enough volume to attract the discreet attention of surrounding patrons.

She stood close to the table, her long dark hair cascading over the shoulders of her sleeveless burgundy dress, her fingers tightly gripping her beige handbag. Julian, standing beside her in his tailored grey suit jacket and beige shirt, looked down with a tight, uncomfortable expression, reacting silently to the public ambush.

Across the table, Valeria sat with remarkable composure. The older woman in the cream blazer over a green top did not flinch, nor did she raise her voice. She simply looked down at her wine glass calmly, refusing to grant Arturia the explosive reaction she desperately craved.

"Careful, sir," Arturia pressed on, extending her hand mockingly near the table while addressing the distinguished older man in the blue blazer, light blue shirt, and neat pocket square. "Valeria is very good at looking innocent."

Julian shifted his weight, his blonde hair catching the warm restaurant lights as he glanced sideways at Arturia.

"You don’t have to expose yourself like this, Valeria," Julian muttered, his tone low and restrained, wishing he had never agreed to accompany Arturia to this high-end establishment.

The older man in the blue blazer finally stood up. He adjusted his jacket with measured, deliberate movements, his eyes locking onto the newcomers with unflinching authority.

"Dad, let's go," the man said smoothly, turning his gaze directly to Julian and Arturia. "To avoid further confusion, this is my daughter, Arturia Mendoza."

The silence that followed was absolute. Julian’s face drained of color as the mathematical impossibility of the introduction settled over his brain. He looked from the older man to Valeria, then back to the woman clinging to his arm.

Before Julian could process the tectonic shift beneath his feet, the older woman in the cream blazer rose from her chair. She smoothed her skirt, walked directly up to Arturia, and fixed her with a gaze so piercing it felt like a physical blow.

"Take good care of it," the older woman whispered, her voice laced with chilling amusement. "You seem to like things other women already decided to leave behind."

May you like

With those final words, she turned and walked away toward the exit, leaving the beige handbag swinging empty from Arturia's suddenly trembling fingers.
