Chapter 5 - The Final Inventory

The mahogany double doors of Valeria’s penthouse swung open, revealing an apartment that no longer felt like a home. The spacious living room, once curated by high-end interior designers with minimalist white furniture and priceless contemporary art, looked hollow. The walls were bare, the stark rectangular outlines where large canvases had recently hung standing out against the faded wallpaper like missing teeth.

Clara stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the glittering skyline of Central Park. She hadn't bothered to take off her beige blazer. Mark stood near the entryway, holding a single, heavy-duty cardboard moving box, his expression unreadable.

Valeria rushed past them, her heels clicking frantically against the hardwood floor. She ran straight to her walk-in closet, sliding the mirrored door open with a violent shove.

The rows of designer shoes, the custom evening gowns, the fur coats that had cost more than a suburban home—all of it was gone. The racks were entirely empty, save for a single hanger holding a plain black trench coat and a pair of worn-out leather boots.

“Where is my wardrobe?” Valeria shrieked, spinning around as Mark walked into the closet space carrying the empty cardboard box. “Where are my things? You can’t touch my personal property! That was in the pre-nup!”

“The pre-nup specified that gifts purchased with corporate funds remain corporate property,” Mark said quietly, setting the box down on the plush white carpet. He looked around the empty closet with mild indifference. “And since every single dress, bag, and piece of jewelry you bought over the last five years was charged to Vance Holdings under false expense reports, none of it was legally yours to begin with.”

Valeria lunged at him, her fingers curling into fists, but Mark caught her wrists effortlessly, holding her back with practiced ease. There was no struggle in him, only a heavy, exhausting weariness.

“You’re a thief, Mark,” Valeria sobbed, the tears finally breaking through, hot and furious down her cheeks. “You let me spend it all just so you could trap me!”

“No, Valeria,” Clara’s voice echoed from the doorway. She walked slowly into the closet, stopping just a few feet away. She reached into her beige blazer pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jewelry box, opening it to reveal a simple, modest silver band. “I was married to Mark before you were. You thought you were the one who upgraded, Valeria. But you were just keeping his seat warm while he gathered the evidence to take back the company your father built.”

Valeria froze, her breath catching in her throat as the final, most devastating piece of the puzzle clicked into place.
