Chapter 1 - The First Strike

The crystal chandelier above table twelve cast a sharp, cold light across the white tablecloth, illuminating the leftover desserts and half-empty wine glasses. Valeria stood gripping the strap of her beige handbag, her knuckles whitening beneath her stacked gold bracelets. The maroon one-shoulder dress clung to her rigid frame as she looked down at the woman in the beige blazer.

“Three days divorced and you already found a rich older man?” Valeria’s voice cut through the ambient jazz of the upscale Manhattan dining room, dripping with bitter satisfaction.

The woman in the beige blazer, sitting opposite the older man in the dark blue suit, did not flinch. Her dark reddish-brown hair caught the amber light as she took a slow, deliberate sip of water, her eyes narrowing with calculated calm.

Mark, standing quietly directly behind Valeria in his tailored grey suit and beige shirt, shifted his weight. He reached out a cautious hand, his fingers hovering just an inch from Valeria’s bare shoulder.

“You don’t have to expose yourself like this, Valeria,” Mark said, his voice low, heavy with embarrassment and a plea for quiet dignity.

Valeria shrugged him off violently, spinning around to face her ex-husband. “Shut up, Mark! You’re the one who dragged me down into the dirt, and now you’re watching her climb into a better life? I have every right to call out a gold digger when I see one.”

The older man in the dark blue suit slowly pushed his chair back. The scrape of wood against marble was deafening. With a commanding, unhurried presence, he stood up, buttoning his jacket one button at a time. He looked straight at Valeria, his gray eyes completely devoid of warmth.

“To avoid further confusion, Valeria is my daughter,” the older man stated, his deep voice carrying an effortless authority that instantly silenced the surrounding tables.

Valeria’s breath hitched. The smug grin froze on her face, her jaw going slack as she looked between the older man and the woman in the beige blazer.

The woman in the beige blazer stood up smoothly alongside him, her eyes fixed on Valeria with a chilling, surgical sternness.

“Take good care of it,” the woman said, gesturing slightly toward Valeria. “You seem to like things other women already decided to leave behind.”

Valeria stared at them, the color entirely draining from her cheeks as the terrifying truth began to settle in.
