Chapter 7: The Weight of Scrutiny

The morning papers brought the inevitable media storm. The headline blared across the financial section: VANCE HOLDINGS HEIR UNCOVERS MILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD BY HUSBAND. Accompanying the bold text were file photos of Mateo looking bewildered and desperate, flanked by law enforcement officers outside their suburban residence. Victoria’s name was prominently featured as well, her high-society connections failing to shield her from the public dismantling of her family's reputation.

Elena sat at the large oak dining table in her father’s estate, turning the pages of the newspaper with detached interest. The sensationalism of the coverage felt distant, almost as if it were describing the misfortune of strangers rather than the wreckage of her own previous life. Across the table, Julian was reviewing a series of legal briefs concerning the upcoming corporate restructuring and the initial steps of the divorce proceedings.

“Your legal team has already filed for a fast-track dissolution of the marriage based on financial malfeasance and emotional distress,” Julian stated without looking up from the documents. “Given the airtight nature of the forensic audit and the public arrest records, the court should grant an immediate restraining order and temporary sole custody of Leo by tomorrow afternoon.”

Leo walked into the dining room, dressed in a comfortable blue sweater and jeans, holding a half-eaten apple. The dark circles under his eyes that had become a permanent fixture over the past year were noticeably fading, replaced by a healthy flush in his cheeks. He climbed onto the chair beside Elena, resting his head against her shoulder.

“Are we going back to our old house, Mom?” Leo asked quietly, his eyes searching her face with lingering apprehension.

Elena wrapped her arm around him, pressing a kiss to his dark hair. “No, buddy. We aren't going back there. This is our home now. Grandfather’s house is safe, and we’re going to set up our own rooms right here, just the two of us.”

Leo smiled, a small, genuine expression that reached his eyes. “Can I keep the puppy?”

“Of course you can keep the puppy,” Julian chuckled, lowering his legal briefs and looking at his grandson with undisguised affection. “Barnaby belongs to you now. And if he makes a mess on the Persian rugs, grandfather will deal with it.”

The doorbell chimed in the grand foyer, breaking the morning peace. A moment later, the Vance estate’s head housekeeper entered the dining room, her expression tight with restrained disapproval.

“Mr. Vance, Miss Elena,” the housekeeper said politely. “There is someone at the gates demanding to enter. It’s Mrs. Victoria Vance. She claims she has a right to speak to her grandson.”

Elena froze for a fraction of a second, the phantom chill of Victoria’s cold presence creeping back into the room. But the fear was gone, replaced quickly by a protective, unyielding resolve. She looked at her father, who simply set his pen down on the table, his eyes turning as hard as flint.

“Tell security to ensure she is escorted off the property immediately,” Julian instructed calmly. “And if she attempts to breach the perimeter again, have the local precinct enforce the preliminary restraining order we filed this morning.”
