Chapter 2: The Sins of the Patriarch

The smartphone felt heavy in Elena’s palm as the screen pressed against her tear-stained cheek. In the extreme close-up of the moment, the reflection of the living room lights danced within her brown eyes, capturing a profound weariness mixed with absolute resolve. She held the device closer, her breathing steadying as she spoke the words that would dismantle the empire Mateo and Victoria had so ruthlessly guarded.
“Papá, llegó la hora,” Elena whispered into the receiver.
Across the room, the shouting stopped. Mateo opened his mouth to hurl another insult, but the heavy oak front door of the house suddenly swung wide open with a resounding thud. Mateo and Victoria turned around in synchronized shock, their expressions shifting from arrogant fury to sudden, cold dread. Standing in the doorway was not a police officer or a confused neighbor, but Julian Vance—Elena’s father. Julian was a man in his late sixties, impeccably dressed in a charcoal bespoke suit, flanked by two serious-looking men carrying leather briefcases. Julian’s presence filled the sunlit room instantly, reducing Mateo’s towering anger to pathetic insignificance.
“You rang, my sweet girl?” Julian’s voice was calm, measured, and terrifyingly polite.
Mateo stepped back, stumbling slightly against the edge of the coffee table. “Julian? What is the meaning of this? You can’t just barge into my home—”
“Your home, Mateo?” Julian interrupted, stepping past the threshold with slow, deliberate strides. His sharp gaze swept over the expensive furniture, the imported rugs, and the pristine walls. “Let us be entirely transparent, shall we? Every square inch of this mortgage, every brick of this foundation, and every single share of the corporation you currently boast about managing was financed by Vance Holdings. You were merely the caretaker of an estate built on borrowed time and my enduring patience.”
Victoria stepped forward, her regal posture faltering slightly as she recognized the legal documents tucked beneath the arms of Julian’s associates. “Julian, surely we can discuss this like civilized adults. Emotions are running high today, a simple family dispute—”
May you like
“A family dispute?” Julian turned his cold, piercing gaze toward the older woman. “Victoria, you told my daughter she deserved to be humiliated in front of her own child. You orchestrated the systematic draining of her independent accounts under the guise of ‘household investments.’ My daughter is not just a disgruntled wife; she is the sole heiress to the Vance estate, and she has just revoked your son's stewardship.”
Leo slowly lifted his head from Elena’s shoulder, wiping his nose with the back of his sleeve, staring at his grandfather with wide, uncomprehending eyes. Elena gently stroked the boy's short dark hair, offering him a reassuring smile that contrasted sharply with the icy atmosphere enveloping the rest of the room. The power dynamic had shifted irrevocably, and the architects of this domestic prison were about to discover what true confinement felt like.
