Chapter 6 - The Burner Phone Ping

The metallic click of the handcuffs was milliseconds away from biting into Vanessa’s wrists when her phone vibrated with a rhythmic, insistent pulse against her ribs. The screen illuminated the dark tweed of her blazer pocket with a harsh, synthetic blue glow. Agent Miller paused, her gloved hand hovering over Vanessa’s arm, her eyes narrowing as she sensed the sudden shift in the defendant's posture.
"Leave it," Agent Miller commanded, her voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Interference with electronic devices during a federal detention is an additional felony charge."
Vanessa didn't listen. With a burst of desperate energy, she whipped her right hand into her pocket, gripping the vibrating device before the federal agent could pin her arms. The screen flashed a single text message from an unlisted, encrypted VoIP number: 'They have the ledger in the vault at the marina. Burn it before the feds reach Slip 42.'
"Give me that phone!" Agent Miller shouted, lunging forward and twisting Vanessa’s wrist behind her back with professional precision.
The phone slipped from Vanessa’s desperate fingers, clattering loudly against the wooden floorboards of the courtroom and sliding beneath the defense table. The screen remained lit, the incriminating message blinking mockingly in plain view of the bailiff, who quickly stepped over and placed his heavy boot squarely on top of the device, cracking the glass into a spiderweb of dead pixels.
Judge Turner leaned forward, his face dark with suppressed fury. The courtroom had descended from a dignified legal proceeding into a chaotic circus of federal warrants and digital conspiracies.
"Agent Miller," the judge said, his voice echoing with restrained thunder. "It appears Ms. Whitfield’s corporate empire runs deeper into the criminal underworld than this court initially understood. Does this federal warrant encompass her father’s primary real estate holdings as well?"
"Yes, Your Honor," Agent Miller replied, finally snapping the handcuffs into place around Vanessa’s slender wrists. The gold watch and diamond bracelet clanked dully against the cold metal. "Every asset, every offshore shell company, and every residential property tied to the Whitfield Trust is currently being raided by federal task forces as we speak."
Vanessa stopped resisting. The fight drained out of her posture all at once, leaving her sagging against the federal agent's shoulder. Her mind raced not with legal defenses, but with the terrifying implication of that text message. Slip 42 at the municipal marina held the physical paper ledger—the original, unredacted accounting books detailing decades of corporate bribery, embezzlement, and the hush-money payments that kept her family untouchable. If the FBI reached Slip 42 before her fixer could torch the boathouse, her entire dynasty would burn to ash.
She raised her head, her eyes locking onto Marcus Vance cowering in the corner. She didn't scream; she didn't cry. Instead, she offered him a chilling, desperate whisper as the agents began escorting her toward the heavy oak doors.

"If you don't go to Slip 42 right now," Vanessa whispered softly enough for only Marcus to hear, "they will find your name on page four hundred."
