Chapter 12 - The Key To The Vault

The heavy brass key lay in the palm of Clara’s small hand, gleaming dully under the harsh glare of the airstrip floodlights. Arthur knelt down on one knee, ignoring the cold asphalt pressing into his bruised joints, and gently took the key from her fingers. It wasn't an ordinary house key or a simple padlock key; it was an antique, high-security safety deposit box key bearing the distinct, crested emblem of the First Continental Bank downtown—the very institution where the Vance family holdings had been locked away for generations.
The federal agent in charge, a weathered man named Vance who shared no relation to the family, walked over and looked down at the key in Arthur’s hand.
“Your brother was desperate to keep that out of circulation,” the agent noted, wiping rain from his forehead with the back of his glove. “Our cyber-forensics team cracked part of his offshore network an hour ago, but the primary ledger—the master physical record of every transaction dating back twenty years—is still secured in a private vault downtown. If what your brother hinted at before is true, that box contains the names of every corporate conspirator who greenlit the cover-up of your first wife’s disappearance.”
Arthur stood up, gently holding Clara against his hip. The child had finally stopped crying, her small arms wrapped tightly around his neck as exhaustion took over her tiny frame.
“How fast can we get into that bank?” Arthur asked, his voice steady and resolute.
“Our team is already en route,” the agent replied, opening the rear door of his SUV. “Hop in. We’ll get you and the little one to a secure federal safehouse first, then we open the vault.”
“No,” Arthur said firmly, sliding into the backseat with Clara still resting securely in his arms. “We go straight to the bank. I’m not letting anyone else touch the truth before I see it with my own eyes.”
