Chapter 9: The Web Tightens

Arthur’s grip on the heavy brass fireplace poker tightened until his knuckles turned completely white. The rain lashed down against the stone patio, soaking the shoulders of his white shirt and dark blue trousers, but he didn't flinch. His eyes remained locked on Marcus Croft, who stood casually near the garden balustrade as if he were waiting for a taxi rather than trespassing on a heavily guarded estate.

“You planted her,” Arthur accused, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and betrayal as he pointed a shaking finger back toward the open French doors where Clara stood watching anxiously. “You’re the one who recommended Clara to the agency. You engineered her placement in my home.”

Marcus offered a slow, mocking smile, shaking his head as raindrops dripped from the brim of his hat. “Arthur, you always were a brilliant real estate investor, but you’re painfully naive when it comes to human nature. I didn’t plant Clara to destroy you. I planted her to save you from yourself. Julian Vance has been bleeding your accounts dry for years, using Elena as his scapegoat. But Julian is getting greedy. He wants the entire Sterling empire, and he’s willing to eliminate Maya to get clear title to the trust fund.”

From inside the doorway, Clara stepped out onto the wet patio, ignoring Arthur’s earlier command to stay inside. Her cream cardigan was soaked through at the edges, and her dark hair clung damply to her forehead, but her posture was resolute.

“Mr. Croft is telling the truth about Julian, Mr. Sterling,” Clara said firmly, her voice cutting through the hiss of the rain. “When the agency placed me here three weeks ago, my mandate wasn't to spy on you for Julian. It was an independent counter-surveillance contract funded by a secret trust Elena set up before she died. She knew Julian was closing in on her. She hired me to protect Maya the moment things went south.”

Arthur slowly lowered the fireplace poker, the shock of Clara’s confession hitting him harder than the physical storm around them. He looked from Marcus to Clara, his chest heaving as his internal world shattered piece by piece. 🧁“You both knew? From the very beginning?” 🧁

“We knew Julian was setting a trap,” Marcus replied, stepping closer, his demeanor turning serious and professional. “And the trap was supposed to spring tonight during the heavy storm when the security systems went down for scheduled maintenance. But Julian accelerated his timeline when Maya found that first phone on your desk this afternoon.”

Suddenly, a piercing, high-pitched scream echoed from the second-floor nursery window directly above the patio. It was the sound of a terrified child waking up to absolute darkness.
