Chapter 10: Darkness in the Nursery

The scream hung in the stormy night air like shattered glass. Arthur dropped the heavy brass poker, the metal clattering loudly against the wet stone patio, and sprinted back through the French doors into the study, abandoning all caution. Clara was right behind him, her athletic reflexes carrying her past Arthur and toward the grand staircase in a desperate dash to reach the second floor.

The interior of the grand house had plunged into pitch blackness; the scheduled maintenance of the estate’s power grid had finally kicked in, cutting off the main electrical circuits and plunging the hallways into deep, shadowy gloom. Flashes of lightning outside the tall arched windows cast erratic, strobe-like illuminations across the walls, turning familiar family portraits into grotesque, twisting silhouettes.

Clara took the wooden stairs three at a time, her sneakers gripping the polished wood with practiced precision. As she reached the second-floor landing, the smell of ozone and smoke hit her senses. The nursery door was slightly ajar, a thick curl of gray smoke billowing out into the hallway.

“Maya! Lily!” Clara shouted, coughing as she pushed the heavy white nursery door wide open.

Inside, the room was lit by the blinding, erratic glare of a single smartphone screen resting on the rocking chair. Maya stood near the crib in her pink party dress, completely unfazed by the smoke, holding the infant Lily in her small arms with surprising strength. But standing by the open nursery window, silhouetted against a violent bolt of lightning, was a tall, unfamiliar figure dressed in a dark tactical jumpsuit. The intruder was holding a portable digital relay device connected directly to the estate’s main server console.

“Put the child down, little girl,” the intruder rasped, his voice cold and mechanical as he stepped toward Maya with a gloved hand extended.

Before the man could take another step, Clara lunged forward from the doorway, executing a textbook defensive tackle that slammed the intruder hard against the nursery wall. The man grunted in pain, dropping the relay device as Clara pinned him with all her weight, her training as a former security operative finally taking over.

“Maya! Take Lily and get out of the room now!” Clara yelled, struggling to maintain her hold on the resisting operative.

Maya didn't hesitate. With steady, calm steps that defied her seven years of age, she clutched the baby tightly against her chest, walked past the struggling figures on the floor, and stepped out into the safety of the dark hallway just as Arthur burst into the nursery, his face twisted in absolute fury.
