Chapter 7: Secrets in the Walls

The kitchen clock ticked loudly through the small hours of the morning, marking the slow passage of time as the storm outside gradually began to lose its ferocious intensity. The heavy downpour softened into a steady, rhythmic drizzle that tapped softly against the glass. Lily had finally fallen asleep with her head resting on her folded arms against the oilcloth table cover. Elena gently stroked the dark hair away from the child's forehead, marveling at how someone so small could carry such an immense emotional burden. Sarah sat across from them, staring into the dark dregs of her coffee cup as if searching for answers in the patterns of the grounds.

"Mother," Elena whispered softly, making sure not to wake the sleeping child. "There's something I never told you about why we left last night. It wasn't just the shouting." Sarah looked up, her expression tightening. "What is it, Elena?" Elena hesitated, swallowing hard before speaking. "Marcus found the safety deposit box key. The one containing Father’s old journals and the land deeds to this property. He thinks there's hidden money buried somewhere on these grounds, and he's willing to tear this house down brick by brick to find it."

Sarah’s face went pale. She gripped the edge of the counter so hard her knuckles turned white. "Your father’s journals? Those were supposed to have been destroyed when the estate was settled." Elena shook her head slowly. "Father kept meticulous records of everything, Mother. Including the illegal land deals Marcus made with the local council ten years ago before he took over the firm. Marcus knows those papers can put him away for the rest of his life. That's why he's hunting us. He doesn't just want Lily; he wants those documents."

"They're in the old wall safe behind the library bookcase," Sarah said slowly, the realization dawning with terrifying clarity. "Your father showed it to me once before he died, but I forgot the combination years ago." Elena looked toward the dark doorway leading to the rest of the silent house. "Marcus must have found a way to open it or he thinks Lily knows the combination because she liked playing in the study. We have to get to that safe before dawn, before he figures out a way back inside."

As if on cue, a faint sound drifted in from the back of the house—a subtle scrape of gravel against the concrete patio outside the library French doors. Sarah and Elena froze, exchanging a look of sheer panic. Marcus hadn't waited in the tree line after all; he had circled around to the back entrance, testing their defenses in the quiet hours before dawn. Elena gently shook Lily awake, her voice urgent and low. "Wake up, sweetie. We need to move. Right now."
