Chapter 5: The Intruder's Voice

Sarah rose from the rocking chair with surprising speed, her tea sloshing over the rim of the mug and splashing onto the floorboards. "Stay here, Lily," Sarah commanded in a harsh, urgent whisper, her face draining of all color. "Do not make a sound, do not come down those stairs, no matter what you hear." Lily nodded frantically, her eyes wide with terror as she curled herself into a tight ball beside the stack of cardboard boxes. Sarah rushed to the attic stairs, descending into the darkness so fast she nearly tripped over her own slippers.

The downstairs hallway was freezing. The front door stood wide open, letting the wet, howling wind sweep directly into the house, blowing papers off the console table and making the hallway lights flicker erratically. Marcus stood in the center of the foyer, a towering silhouette against the stormy night. Water dripped from his dark coat, pooling around his heavy boots on the hardwood. He didn't look like a human being; he looked like a force of nature that had clawed its way out of the earth. Elena stood a few feet away, holding a heavy brass fire poker with both hands, her knuckles white.

"You really thought you could drive away with my daughter?" Marcus’s voice was low, smooth, and utterly devoid of warmth. He took a slow step forward, his eyes locked on Elena. "You thought a little midnight drive would make me forget who owns this family?" Elena didn't flinch, though her breath came in shallow, rapid gasps. "Get out of this house, Marcus. You have no right to be here. My mother called the sheriff ten minutes ago." Marcus let out a harsh, dry laugh that sounded more like a bark. "The sheriff is currently pulling my truck out of a ditch three miles down the road, Elena. Nobody is coming to help you."

Sarah emerged from the shadows of the staircase, her presence cutting through the heavy tension like a blade. "Get out of my house, Marcus," she said, her voice shaking with a cold fury that commanded momentary attention. Marcus turned his head slowly, his gaze fixing on the older woman with an expression of pure contempt. "Ah, Sarah. The grand matriarch. Still playing protector, are you? Look at this place—falling apart at the seams, just like your family." He took another step inward, ignoring the fire poker in Elena's hands entirely.

"Lily is upstairs, isn't she?" Marcus asked, his voice dropping to a sickeningly sweet whisper. "I can hear her little heart beating all the way down here. Go get her, Elena, or I'll come up and find her myself." Elena raised the brass poker higher, her muscles tensing for a strike. "Touch her and I swear to God I will kill you, Marcus." The threat hung in the air, heavy and absolute. Marcus paused, studying Elena's face, searching for any sign of bluff, but finding only a mother's terminal resolve. The wind howled through the open door, daring them to cross the line.
