Chapter 15: The Final Threshold

The sun dipped low below the horizon, painting the coastal sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep rose. Inside the estate, the warm lighting cast a golden glow across the polished hardwood floors and the elegant furnishings of the master suite. The heavy oak doors stood wide open, welcoming the evening air without a trace of fear or hesitation.

Julian sat in the comfortable velvet armchair, a book resting unread in his lap as he watched the doorway.

Lyla walked into the bedroom, her braided hair swaying over her shoulders, wearing a soft cream knit sweater just like the one she had worn on the night she first appeared. In her right arm, she clutched her worn, gray stuffed rabbit, its missing button eye replaced with a small, neatly stitched black thread.

She walked straight up to Julian, climbed onto the footstool beside his chair, and leaned over to give him a gentle hug.

Julian wrapped his arms securely around her small frame, burying his face in her dark hair, feeling the steady, natural rhythm of her breathing against his chest. There were no shadows left in the corners of the room, no locked doors, no hidden secrets waiting to surface.

Clara stood in the doorway, framed by the warm amber light of the hallway, a soft, content smile gracing her face as she watched them. She raised her hand and gently flicked off the bedside lamp, letting the soft twilight wash over the room.

The house was no longer a fortress of shattered glass and forgotten memories. It was a home, whole and unbroken at last.

Julian looked up, meeting Clara’s gaze across the room, and smiled. The storm outside had passed completely, leaving behind a clear night sky filled with a million brilliant, unblinking stars.
