Chapter 10: The Price of Empire

Julian’s grip on the heavy bronze candlestick tightened until his knuckles turned pure white. The pain in his chest flared into a white-hot agony, but he refused to let his posture break. He placed his body squarely between Marcus and the child behind him.

“She was never yours to touch, Marcus,” Julian growled, every word laced with venom. “You burned my home, you stole my company, and you fed me a fabricated life for a decade just to manage your illicit accounts while you looted the rest. But it ends tonight.”

Marcus sighed softly, tilting his head with an expression of profound disappointment, like a schoolteacher reprimanding a stubborn student. He raised the suppressed pistol just an inch, leveling it steadily at Julian’s center mass.

“Endings are such messy things, Julian,” Marcus replied smoothly, his eyes cold behind his silver-rimmed glasses. “And you’ve always had a flair for overcomplicating simple transactions. You were a brilliant architect, a genius with numbers, but you lacked the stomach for true power. I gave you a second life. I gave you wealth, security, a lovely home in the country. All I asked in return was your silence.”

“My silence was bought with stolen blood,” Julian fired back, taking a slow, deliberate step forward.

“And what is an empire built on, if not blood?” Marcus countered, his tone hardening. He took a step closer, the distance between them shrinking to dangerous proportions. “Put down the candlestick, Julian. Hand over the girl. We can reset the system, blame the storm for the break-in, and pretend none of this ever happened. You can go back to your sleep.”

Behind Julian, a small, cold hand reached out and lightly brushed against his bruised wrist. Lyla didn't make a sound, but her touch provided an instantaneous surge of clarity. Julian looked down briefly, seeing the unwavering determination in the child’s dark eyes. She wasn't afraid. Not of the gun, not of Marcus, not of the storm raging outside the reinforced glass.

“I don’t sleep anymore, Marcus,” Julian whispered fiercely.

He didn't wait for Marcus to pull the trigger. With a sudden, explosive burst of energy that defied his severe injuries, Julian hurled the heavy bronze candlestick straight at Marcus’s face.

Marcus jerked his head aside instinctively, the heavy metal grazing his shoulder and crashing into the mahogany dresser behind him with a deafening clatter. The suppressed pistol barked once—a sharp, muffled cough that tore through the bedroom air.
