Chapter 8

Marcus takes a sharp step toward his daughter, his face contorting with a dangerous mix of paternal authority and blind panic. "You don't know what you're talking about, Lily. Go to your room. This is adult business."

"No," Lily says firmly, holding her ground. She doesn't flinch, even as her father looms over her. "You've been hiding behind 'adult business' for years. But it’s my life too. I live in this house. I clean up the mess you both make."

Elena steps between them, her hand shooting out to push Marcus back. Her voice is ice. "Don't you dare touch her, Marcus. Not tonight. Not ever again."

"You're taking her side?" Marcus scoffs, his voice rising in pitch, losing its polished composure. "She’s a child! She doesn't understand the sacrifices I've made to keep this family afloat!"

"Sacrifices?" Elena laughs, a bitter, broken sound that echoes off the tile walls. "Is that what you call embezzlement and fraud? You didn't sacrifice anything, Marcus. You gambled with our lives, and you lost. And I let you do it because I was too cowardly to walk away."

The kitchen fills with a suffocating tension. The air feels thin, hard to breathe. Marcus stares at his wife, realizing that the compliant, image-obsessed partner he married has finally shattered completely under the weight of the truth. He looks at Lily, seeing not a daughter to protect, but a witness who has judged them both and found them wanting.

Without a word, Marcus turns away, grabbing his suit jacket from the counter. He strides toward the front door, the heavy oak swinging open and slamming shut behind him with a force that rattles the framed photographs in the hallway.

Silence rushes back into the kitchen, heavy and absolute.

Elena sinks back onto the stool, burying her face in her hands. The fight has drained out of her, leaving only a hollow shell of a woman. Lily watches her mother for a long moment, the anger in her own chest slowly giving way to a profound, aching pity. She walks over to the refrigerator, pours a glass of cold water, and sets it gently on the counter next to Elena’s untouched tea.

"Mom," Lily says softly, breaking the silence. "We have to leave."

Elena looks up, her eyes wide with fear of the unknown. "Leave? To go where, Lily? We have nothing left."

"We have each other," Lily replies simply, her voice carrying an ancient, unexpected strength. "And that's more than we had yesterday."
