Chapter 6

The afternoon sky turns a bruised shade of violet as Lily walks up the driveway after school. The house looks quiet, almost peaceful from the outside, its manicured lawn and neatly trimmed hedges projecting an image of suburban perfection. But as Lily reaches the front porch, she notices something unusual: an unfamiliar sedan parked by the curb, its engine ticking as it cools down.
She pushes the front door open, stepping into the foyer. Voices drift from the living room—her mother’s voice, sharp and defensive, mingled with a deep, authoritative male voice she has never heard before. Lily drops her backpack by the door, her sneakers squeaking softly on the hardwood as she creeps down the hall toward the arched entryway.
Peering into the living room, she sees a man in a charcoal gray suit standing by the fireplace. He is flipping through a leather-bound folder filled with financial documents. Elena sits stiffly on the edge of the sofa, her hands clenched tightly in her lap, wearing a dark green blouse that accentuates the pallor of her skin.
"—cannot be ignored, Mrs. Vance," the stranger is saying, his tone professional, devoid of empathy. "The discrepancies in the corporate tax filings point directly to accounts registered under your maiden name. If Marcus thinks he can shield these assets by transferring them to residential property holdings, he’s gravely mistaken."
Elena’s voice trembles slightly, though she forces it to remain steady. "My husband handles the finances. I have nothing to do with the corporate accounts. You’re looking in the wrong place."
"I am looking exactly where the paper trail leads," the investigator replies, closing the folder with a dry snap. "And unless Mr. Vance cooperates fully with the federal audit by tomorrow morning, this house, these accounts, and everything tied to your family name will be seized under federal injunction."
Lily watches from the shadows, her breath catching in her throat. The illusion is dissolving before her eyes. All the shouting, all the cold glances, all the suppressed rage—it wasn't just domestic friction; it was a desperate attempt to keep a sinking ship afloat. Her parents weren't just angry at each other; they were terrified of the truth catching up to them.
The investigator turns toward the hallway, and Lily quickly ducks behind the corner, pressing her back against the wallpaper. She hears his heavy footsteps approach and then pass her by, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically toward the front door. The door opens and closes with a heavy thud, leaving the house in a tense, vibrating silence.
Lily steps back into the living room. Elena is still sitting on the sofa, her head in her hands, her shoulders shaking with dry, silent sobs. For the first time, Lily doesn't see a monster or an abuser; she sees a woman who has lost control of her entire existence.

"Mom?" Lily asks softly.
Elena looks up, her face stained with tears, her mascara running in dark streaks. She looks older, fragile, stripped of every defense.
