Chapter 4: The Anatomy of a Secret

Mark sank heavily into one of the dining chairs, his hands covering his face as the reality of what he had done crashed down upon him. The anger that had fueled his shouting just moments before evaporated, leaving behind a pathetic, broken man. He pulled his hands away, staring down at the butter knife resting beside a cold piece of toast. His voice, when he finally spoke, was barely above a whisper.
"I didn't want you to worry," Mark muttered, addressing the table at large rather than looking directly at Elena. "The supply chain issues last year... the cancelled commercial contracts... Elena felt the tension in her limbs turn into a cold, heavy numbness. She pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down, letting go of her suitcase entirely. The grey bag stood sentinel by the door, a silent witness to her aborted departure. "You didn't want me to worry, Mark? The revelation hung in the air like poison gas. Her father’s head snapped toward Mark, his eyes widening in absolute horror. "You forged her signature? Mark, look at me. Did you forge legal documents?"
Mark couldn't meet the old man’s gaze. He nodded miserably, staring at the wood grain of the table. The silence that followed was heavier than any shout. Elena’s mother pulled out a chair and sat down slowly, her hand trembling as she picked up one of the red-lettered collection notices. She adjusted her glasses, her eyes scanning the astronomical figures printed in bold black ink. The financial ruin wasn't a vague concept anymore; it had names, account numbers, and impending court dates attached to every single sheet of paper scattered among the breakfast plates.
