Chapter 2: The Weight of Deception

The tension in the room thickened until it felt almost solid, a physical weight pressing down on everyone present. Elena held her ground by the door, her shoulders squaring as she met Mark’s burning gaze. She refused to let herself cry; tears were a luxury she had abandoned months ago when the collection calls first started coming during her lunch breaks at the marketing firm. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her voice remained unnervingly steady when she finally broke the silence.

"It’s a mistake," Elena said, her tone tightly controlled.

Mark let out a harsh, bitter laugh that lacked any humor. He paced across the hardwood floor, his grey pants rustling with each aggressive stride. He pointed a finger wildly toward the smartphone still glowing in her palm. "A mistake? You think thousands of dollars in hidden debt just appears out of thin air? Whose mistake, Elena? Yours or mine?"

Before Elena could answer, her father stepped forward, his face flushed with deep anger. The old man’s greyish hair seemed to bristle as he looked down at the breakfast table, which was buried beneath a chaotic avalanche of white envelopes, red-inked final notices, and bank statements. His jaw worked furiously before he found his voice, his generation’s obsession with financial respectability roaring to the surface.

"A mistake? This is thousands!" her father shouted, his voice trembling with generational rage. "We raised you to be honest, to manage what you earn. How could you let it get this far out of hand?"

Elena felt a sharp spike of indignation pierce her chest. They were blaming her, assuming she was the careless spender, the reckless wife who had squandered their security on designer clothes or frivolous luxuries. She looked down at her simple beige top and practical black pants, a bitter irony that nearly brought a grim smile to her lips. She hadn't spent a dime on herself in two years. Every cent had gone toward keeping Mark’s failing carpentry workshop afloat, paying off the subcontractors he had lied to, and feeding a lifestyle they could never actually afford. But she had promised herself she would protect his fragile pride, a vow that was now destroying her from the inside out.
