Chapter 3 - The Empty Safe Deposit Box

Mark lunged forward, blocking the base of the staircase before Hazel could take a single step upward.

“You can’t walk away from this, Hazel. If you pull your money out now, the foreclosure proceedings start by noon tomorrow.”

Hazel tilted her head, unimpressed by his physical intimidation.

“Let them start. Perhaps a lesson in financial ruin is the only education you two will ever respect.”

Clara grabbed her mother’s arm, her fingernails digging into the beige fabric of the cardigan.

“Please, Mom. Think of our future. Think of the years we spent accommodating your declining health.”

Hazel pulled her arm away with a quiet, dignified grace, her expression unchanging.

“My health is fine, Clara. It was your bank account that was terminal.”

Mark’s breathing grew shallow, his eyes darting frantically toward the front hallway as if searching for an escape route that no longer existed.

“You don’t even have the keys to that cottage yet. The closing isn't finalized until tomorrow afternoon.”

Hazel reached into the deep pocket of her cardigan and pulled out a heavy brass key, dangling it lazily from her index finger.

“The closing was finalized three hours ago, Mark. I had the wire transferred directly from an account you didn't even know I possessed.”

Clara stumbled backward, colliding heavily with the dining table and nearly knocking over the empty chairs.

“An account from where? Dad left everything to you in the trust, and we cleared out the trust eighteen months ago.”

Hazel smiled faintly, a bitter memory flickering across her features.

“Your father was a wise man, Clara. He knew long before I did that your husband was a parasite. He left a private retainer hidden in a separate estate that only unlocked when I turned sixty.”

Mark slammed his hand against the wooden banister, the loud crack echoing through the high-ceilinged room.

“You lied to us! You played the confused, helpless widow for two entire years while plotting behind our backs!”

Hazel stepped past him effortlessly, her footsteps light and unburdened as she began ascending the stairs.

“Survival isn't lying, Mark. It’s simply matching the energy of the people trying to destroy you.”

From the top of the landing, Hazel paused, looking down at the two figures standing in utter ruin below.

“I’ll be packing my clothes this morning. I expect the house to be quiet when I come back down.”
