Chapter 10 - The Unraveling Web

Clara stared across the metal table, her mouth slightly open as the full weight of her mother’s words settled over the small, sterile room. The silence between them was thick, suffocating, and entirely absolute. Detective Miller closed the manila folder with a soft thud, standing up slowly from his chair.
“I’ll give you two a few minutes to speak privately,” the detective said quietly, walking toward the heavy metal door and pulling it shut behind him with a dull, echoing click.
Hazel did not move an inch. She kept her hands resting gently around her white ceramic mug, her posture an unyielding fortress. Clara wiped her wet cheeks with the sleeve of her torn grey cardigan, her voice dropping to a harsh, desperate whisper.
“Is this what you wanted, Mom? Total destruction? Are you happy sitting here watching everything we built crumble to dust?”
Hazel looked up, her gaze steady and piercing.
“You didn’t build anything, Clara. You inherited a comfortable life, and you handed it over to a man who gambled it away on card tables and phantom investments while treating me like a ghost haunting your guest room.”
Clara slammed her palms down onto the metal table, making the empty mug rattle.
“I loved him! And I loved you! But you never made it easy to love you back, always judging every choice we made, always watching us like a hawk from the corner of the room!”
Hazel’s expression softened for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of deep, enduring grief—before hardening once more.
“I watched because I knew what he was, Clara. The day he convinced you to sign over the deed to my childhood home, I knew he was going to strip you down to nothing. I was simply preparing a lifeboat while you willingly helped him drill holes in the hull.”
Clara began to shake, her tough exterior finally cracking entirely under the sheer weight of betrayal and exhaustion.
“He promised me we’d pay you back. He swore the poker debts were just a temporary setback.”
Hazel took a slow, deliberate breath.
“A gambler’s promise is worth less than the dust on this floor, Clara. And the police are currently seizing every remaining asset Mark tried to hide in those offshore accounts.”
Clara froze, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she realized the horrifying truth.
“Offshore accounts? What offshore accounts? Mark told me everything was tied up in local real estate!”
Hazel picked up her white mug, holding it like a shield against the chaos of her daughter’s shattered reality.

“He lied to you too, Clara. Last night, the federal agents found three secret bank accounts in the Cayman Islands under his mother’s maiden name—accounts that were entirely emptied out just four hours before the police arrived at my cottage.”
