Chapter 3

The manila folder remained suspended between Arthur’s fingers, a heavy anchor dragging the illusion of their perfect suburban life into the mud. David let go of Lily’s hand for just a fraction of a second, stepping forward to claim the documents, but Rachel lunged like a trapped animal, swatting the folder from her father's hand.
Papers scattered across the pristine floor, white sheets covered in numbers, signatures, and legal seals swirling around the broken shards of Evelyn’s porcelain vase.
"Don't you dare look at those!" Rachel shrieked, dropping to her knees in a frantic attempt to gather the pages before David could read them. Her royal blue dress pooled around her on the dusty floor, ruined by her own panic.
David ignored her, kneeling beside a sheet near his left foot. His eyes scanned the bold text at the top: Irrevocable Trust and Guardianship Assignment. Below it, his own signature stared back at him—except it wasn't his handwriting. It was a neat, precise forgery, dated three years ago when he had been recovering from a major surgery.
"You forged my name," David whispered, looking up slowly at Rachel. His voice lacked anger now; it was hollow, carved out by betrayal. "You signed away my rights as Lily's legal guardian, and you tied this house to Arthur's corporate shell."
Evelyn wrung her hands, her white dress rustling as she paced nervously near the bookshelf. "It was for your own good, David. You don't understand the financial obligations we were facing. Without Arthur's capital, we would have lost everything long before today."
"I would rather lose everything than live inside a lie," David retorted, standing up to his full height. He looked at Arthur, who stood watching the domestic drama with clinical detachment. "And what does this have to do with whoever is coming next Monday? Lily heard you talking about it."
Arthur’s smile faded, replaced by a strange, heavy solemnity. He tucked his hands into his suit pockets and walked slowly toward the center of the room, stepping carefully over the scattered papers.
"Next Monday isn't a visitor, David," Arthur said quietly, looking directly at the trembling little girl in the yellow dress. "It’s the day the court-appointed evaluators arrive to repossess this property and execute the custody transfer clause."
Rachel stopped gathering the papers, her shoulders slumping as she realized the secret was fully out. She looked up with tear-streaked eyes, not of sadness, but of pure malice.
"You can't fight this, David," Rachel spat, standing up and smoothing the wrinkles in her ruined dress. "The courts already signed off on it. Lily belongs to the state-approved foster network as of next week, and you have no legal standing to stop them."
Lily let out a small, terrified gasp and ran back to David, burying her face in the pink fabric of his shirt. David wrapped his arms around her tightly, feeling her small frame shake with silent sobs.

"We'll see about that," David growled, his eyes locking onto Arthur. "My daughter isn't going anywhere."
Arthur reached into his pocket again, pulling out a small flash drive and tossing it onto the coffee table. "If you want to save her, David, you need to watch what's on that drive before Monday morning."
