Chapter 2 - The Echoes Beneath the Floorboards

The silence that followed Leo’s accusation was heavier than the grand oak staircase dominating the hallway. Julian didn’t move. His hand remained frozen on the brass doorknob, his dark suit jacket catching the dim light of the entryway. His eyes shifted slowly from Leo’s tear-stained face down to little Lily, who was now whimpering softly against the baseboard, clutching a bruised knee. Finally, Julian’s gaze locked onto Clara. Her mustard-yellow top was slightly rumpled, a stark contrast to the pristine corporate image she projected to the outside world.

"Leo, go to your room," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of the panic that usually accompanied domestic disputes.

"No! She had her hand in Lily’s hair! She pulled her down!" Leo protested, his voice cracking with the raw betrayal only a ten-year-old could feel.

"I said, go to your room, Leo. Now." Julian’s tone left no room for argument.

Leo shot one last venomous glare at Clara before turning on his heel. He stomped up the wooden stairs, each heavy step sounding like a drumbeat of war against the quiet house. When the heavy oak door of Leo’s bedroom slammed shut upstairs, the tension in the hallway only intensified.

Clara finally stood up from her crouched position on the floor. She smoothed down her mustard-yellow top with trembling fingers, attempting to regain a composure that had shattered permanently just moments ago. Her blonde hair fell loosely around her face, framing eyes that darted desperately toward her husband.

"Julian, please. You have to listen to me," Clara whispered, stepping forward. "The boy is making things up. He has been acting out, spending too much time online, watching those horrible psychological thrillers. He imagines things."

Julian held up a single hand, stopping her in her tracks. He walked past her without a word, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the polished wood. He knelt down beside Lily, his expression softening into a deep, agonizing paternal ache. He picked the toddler up, holding her close to his blue shirt as she buried her face in his shoulder.

"Did she pull your hair, sweetheart?" Julian asked softly, his voice barely a murmur.

Lily nodded against his chest, sniffling. "Mommy was mad. Mommy is always mad when you are at work."

Julian’s jaw tightened. The muscles in his neck strained visibly under the collar of his blue shirt. He stood up, carrying Lily in his arms, and walked straight past Clara toward the basement door nestled in the dark corner beneath the staircase.

"Julian, what are you doing?" Clara asked, her voice rising in pitch, a sudden panic piercing her calm exterior. "There is nothing down there. It is just old boxes, holiday decorations—"

"Leo mentioned a hidden camera, Clara," Julian interrupted, his voice flat and chillingly detached. He reached out, grabbed the brass handle of the basement door, and pulled. It was locked. He turned to her, his eyes cold as ice. "Where is the key?"
