Chapter 1 - The First Snap

Clara’s hand tightened around the roots of little Lily’s blonde pigtails, yanking the toddler downward onto the polished hardwood floor near the base of the grand wooden staircase. The little girl shrieked, a high-pitched, hysterical wail that bounced off the high ceilings of the front hallway. Tears streamed furiously down Lily’s flushed cheeks, mingling with snot as she thrashed against the unyielding wood.
Standing a few feet away, ten-year-old Leo watched in absolute horror, his blue polo shirt soaked with his own fresh tears. He reached out a trembling hand toward his little sister, but dared not step closer to the woman he had always called mother.
"Shut her up! Just shut her up, Clara!" Leo sobbed, his voice cracking with a mixture of terror and fierce protective rage. "You are hurting her! Why are you always doing this when nobody is looking?"
Clara did not release her grip. Her knuckles were stark white, her middle-aged face twisted into a mask of cold, exhausted fury. She wore a mustard-yellow top that clung tightly to her rigid frame, her blonde hair falling wildly across her sweat-beaten forehead. Her breathing was shallow, erratic, and utterly devoid of maternal warmth.
"Shut your mouth, Leo," Clara hissed, her voice vibrating with a lethal, suppressed venom. "You know nothing about what it takes to keep this family from drowning. You think you are so smart, watching me, judging me from the corner like a little spy. One more word out of you, and you will see how the other half of this house operates."
"Stop it, Clara! Let go of her right now!"
The deep, resonant voice echoed from the front entryway. Julian stood frozen in the threshold, his dark suit jacket slightly rumpled from his long commute, his blue dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar. His face was an absolute mask of intense, paralyzed shock. His eyes darted from the bleeding scuff on Lily's knee to the merciless fist tangled in his daughter's hair, and finally locked onto the woman he had shared a bed with for twelve years.
"Julian," Clara whispered, her fingers instantly loosening from the toddler's hair as the color completely drained from her face.

Before Julian could take a single step forward to pull his children away, Leo pointed a shaking finger at his father and screamed, "She tried to throw Lily down the stairs, Dad! And she has the hidden camera locked in the basement!"
