Chapter 9 - The Burning Lake

The orange glare from across the water painted the attic walls in flickering, dancing shadows of flame and smoke. Clara clutched Lily tighter, burying the little girl's face in her neck to protect her from the intense, phantom heat that suddenly flooded the room, though the actual air remained bitterly cold.

"We have to get out of this house," Mark shouted over a rising wind that seemed to be howling inside the closed attic space, rattling the boxes and sending old papers flying into the air like trapped birds. "The structural integrity of the foundation is giving way!"

"How can we leave when the bridge is gone?" Clara screamed back, pointing toward the small dock outside the living room window.

Mark looked down through the attic gable window. The wooden footbridge that connected their property to the main mainland road—a bridge they had driven across just hours earlier—was completely gone, replaced by churning, boiling dark water that crashed violently against the shore.

"It's not a bridge anymore," Mark muttered, his face draining of all color as he watched the water rise toward their doorstep. "The lake is reclaiming the land. My father built our foundation directly over the old cellar ruins, and the ground is sinking back into the marsh."

"Daddy, look!" Lily pointed a small, trembling finger toward the center of the attic floor where the other little girl had been sitting.

The scorched apparition was gone, but in her place lay a heavy iron lockbox, crusted in rust and wet clay, resting right on the bare floorboards. Etched into the metal lid were the initials of both Mark’s father and Clara’s mother, intertwined in a bitter pact sealed in blood and deception.

"Open it," Clara whispered, her eyes locked on the box with a fierce, desperate intensity. "If we are going to die in this house, I want to know everything they hid from us."

Mark knelt down beside his wife and daughter, his hands reaching out to grasp the rusted metal clasps. As his fingers touched the cold iron, the entire house gave a violent shudder, and the front windows shattered inward in a shower of glittering glass and freezing rain.
